In NY, for the most part, it's going to rust out before it wears out
Here too I find, 15 years is my goal before the rust makes it unsafe, which also would get our cars up around 200k miles which has been fine for all the drivetrains we've had so far. No major repairs other than a Neon headgasket at 60k miles and then it went to wreckers running well near 200k miles. In NY, for the most part, it's going to rust out before it wears out
2011 Prius III. Paid MSRP + tax, so $28K.
Currently at 225,000 miles.
Major expenses:
6 sets of tires at $600/set = $3600
Headgasket job (DIY) $1K
Oil, filters, wipers, struts/stocks, brakes, alignment, etc. (DIY) $2K?
This puts me at 15.4 cents/mile without accounting depreciation, fuel or insurance. To be honest, the number is still higher than I would like.
Any? My car is worth $5K more than I paid for it late last year. Buy a quality car at MSRP and it will appreciate right now.Let’s say you buy a new car. Nothing unusual, some sort of daily driver like a Camry or an Accord. You pay a couple thousand below MSRP. How many trouble-free miles (no major repairs) do you need to get out of that car before you feel like you got your money’s worth out of it?

..... I honestly think the 15 year mark is often more important than the 150,000 mi mark.
