Ford/Honda and so on got into 5W20. Now GM (and others) is going big into 0W20. We all know 0W16 is just around the corner. Yesterday I was told that Honda is currently looking into 0W8. WOW. Where does it stop? At the current rate, we'll be into negative #'s before long.

As CAFE keeps inching upwards, we'll continue to try using thinner oils. As long as the manufacturer is happy that the protection is ok, it's one of the cheapest ways to increase the MPG. ATF is also going in this direction. Dex VI is "thinner" than Dex III. And Toyota's WS is even thinner than that.

Thinner but shear stable. But I still change out the WS at 50k intervals. So far so good.

I grew up thinking 10,000 weight STP made good sense for good lubrication. Now we have 5w-20 for engines and heavy equipment gear box and final drives are lubed with ATF (actually UTF but add package may be different) which is more like 10-20 weigh oil.

Meanwhile in other parts of the world where CAFE doesnt rule, the same cars are spec'd for 10w40 and 20W50 instead of 5w20 or 5w30. So whats really best for the car? It really seems to me that the lives of our engines are being shortened for a couple mpg.
now im not saying you should run 20W50 in a honda, but 8 grade is just as ridiculous.

Keep in mind this is coming from a guy who runs 40 grade in a 5w20 spec'd truck.

I've found that certain parts of the world spec oils that are easily attainable. It's just that easy. And just that simple.

Back in the 1980's if your friends asked you what you ran in your Honda and you did not say 20/50 they would ask "so it's your moms car then?"

In Europe regular focus and fiesta recommends 5w30 here it's 5w20

Generally as a rule I look at what the automakers specify in Europe, Japan, and Korea for identical models we receive here in the USA, most of the time the weights recommended are a bit heavier. It seems to me that when CAFE ISN'T a factor 5w-30 and
0w-30 seem to be favorites among many makers.

Probably be OK mixed 50/50 with 20W-50...

Amsoil have a teardown after 100k miles on a Vegas taxi running 0w20.

Average oci was 1000 hours / 15k miles at average speed of 15mph. So 2-3 times the recommended severe service interval.

Las Vegas desert ambient heat plus stop and go plus continual operation would push the oil further than almost any regular driver.

Castrol 20W-50 was the best performance oil you could get and all of us gearheads ran it.

And wore out our engines with that nasty thick [censored].

This is a random question but pertains to thin fluids, what is the viscosity of water? Is 0 weight the base of the centi stroke scale with water being the base/ calibration point?

I still run that nasty stuff in the MGs, it's just so nostalgic and groovy

A buddy of mine switched his dodge pick up over to GTX 20W-50 when it hit 200k miles. The truck has over 350k on it today and the only engine parts replaced are water pumps and a high volume oil pump at 300k. It has 30lbs of oil pressure at idle and doesn't smoke. I wouldn't call it nasty [censored].
