How long should break-in oil be run?

I didn't think Hyundai uses any special break in oils. As far as changing early, flip a coin. I'd go 500 to a 1000 miles change the oil and filter, use a conventional oil. Run that about 1500-2000 miles change that along with the filter. Then use your favorite oil and follow the OM suggested OCI's.
Others will say run the full OCI suggested in the OM. Your call, mine comes out as stated above.

If it were my car, I would change @ 500 miles. I think most car makers build their engines in an almost sterile environment and are therefore very clean inside (no metal shavings or lint from rags). You could probably go 3,000 miles with no problem. But if it was mine, I would change before 1,000 miles
Here is how I do it. Run FF for 500 miles drop oil and filter, run conventional oil, until I have 2000 miles, drop it again along with the filter. At that point I run synthetic oil, until I buy a new car and then change over to conventional in the older car. I still run synthetic in my 88 Ford, but that's another story. Just follow the OM after the short OCI's.
If an engine was specifically designed calling for synthetic oil, then I would do the same thing as above only using a synthetic oil. So far I haven't run into that yet.

Put 4 or 5 pieces of paper in a hat. On each write down everything from leaving it in the full recommended mileage/time to some progressive extension method (500/1500/3000/whatever you end up at).
Mix them up and pull one out. Do what it says. I did one short OCI on my wife's 99. I don't recall anything special with my 02 jeep. That is, I had no "plan". On a reman long block I did something like 300/600/1500/3000, iirc.
Now if it's a Honda, ninja mercenaries will descend from above if you touch it too soon before the full OEM recommendation.
It's kinda like the warning that the monolith gave Earth about IO. Don't go there.

Of all my cars I bought new, I had FF in until the normal interval. Actually, the '00 MB E430 had the first oil change more than 1k miles passed the FSS (Flexible Service System). The car has more than 100k miles now and consumes no oil between changes.

Run it the same as you intend to run the subsequent fills.
We have two Hyundai vehicles. Ran one approximately 4,000 miles before the lst oil change. The other approximately 3,000 miles.
We run synthetic 5W20 oil and change it every 6 months as we don't drive that much.
7500 miles is under ideal conditions. Take a look at the owners manual of what = severe conditions.

Actually, thanks to many of you and your excellent advice I kept the older car in the family running and running and running and it just lasted forever and even though it was on its last legs it still ran. I was about to take it to the junkyard when "magica" our nice little government officials decided that I could trade it in for a pretty little $4500 bonus for keeping it running so long which very much amuses me as Im not sure our founding fathers imagined a government that would tax productive and valuable members of its society to pay me big bucks for a vehicle that had been driven down to scrap value.
Im very surprised but many car dealers did not really want to sell me a car and were kind of snotty about it. They had lots of customers and low inventory and did not seem thrilled at a customer that wanted a deal. Still, I found a Hyundai dealer out of state and they had a $2000 rebate on top of the $4500 goverment subsidy and knocked a bit off the sticker price and they offered a deal when others would not so a pretty blue Elantra arrived in the driveway.
I am giving this car to my Dad and I loaned him my Bitog account so he could get all of your fine advice on when he should get the oil changed for the first time. We are going to meet halfway and switch vehicles and I will get to have fun seeing how long I can keep his older Camry running and he will get a NEW CAR !!!! Insert your favorite Bob Barker sound bites.
Hyundai says that if you use a non Hyundai oil filter that it can cause their engine to ping so he ran out and bought 3 of them. He does not know if it has a special break in oil like Honda uses or if it is a standard oil.
I told him that he could make a post here and that people with Hyundais and other experts would be here to guide and advise him about breaking in a car so that it will last forever.
On a side note, the Hyundai Elantra is a far better car than I ever imagined. Its amazing and Im kind of astonished really. I never paid much attention to them because I never imagined buying a Hyundai or any vehicle not made in America. I broke down and went with it when their dealer showed me that he actually wanted to sell me a car when others did not. And I am quite surprised that this car is as good as it is. Once I get this car Zaino'd and waxed I think my Dad is really going to love it and its so nice to be able to do something for him for a change rather than vice versa and Im pretty happy with how things turned out. Id never even noticed an Elantra before and had not even sat in one and just bought the thing because they would deal and others would not. I seriously got one quote from a different dealer during the cash for clunkers week at a remarkable price of only $1750 above sticker. I bought the Elantra because it came with a good deal and since that time it has been more impressive than I ever imagined.
Anyway, my Dad is very excited and I am too because I just did not dream that Hyundai made this good of a car and so he borrowed my Bitog account and came here to get all of your good advice about oil filters and when to change the oil for the first time and what oil to use and all the other great advice that you guys bring to the tribological challenged each and every day. So please keep those wonderful comments coming and help us out.
Oh and one other thing .... Gary ..... you are still a silver tongued deeeeeevil. Its nice to revisit old haunts and see some friends still around the place.
