Who knows? And, if it's a franchise, they could be using Coastal unrated 30W and who would know the difference. The place was creepy and filthy. All-around the horn, every aspect of the whole experience gave me the heebie-jeebies.

I felt like I was turning my new child who needed surgery over to a crew of sausage-butchers. That is an apt analogy, I'd say. And never again, trust me.

Is it a corporate owned Jiffy Lube? If so, they should be using either Pennzoil or Quaker State 5W30. Do they fly the Pennzoil or Quaker State sign in front?

J-Lubes around here are great; they use Pennzoil or Quaker State 5W30 in the bulk tanks.

Pennzoil. Bulk, out of a barrel, I guess, it comes out of the hoses in the ceiling-reels. Those reels were labled SJ. So, if something happens to the engine, under warranty to a car that requires SM, does the manufacturer get to screw a guy out of his warranty because he used Poopy-Loob's SJ, assuming he was getting the right stuff? Is that conceivable? My 2005 requires SJ or later, just for the record, but I was going to change it out to SM, and will in the future.

It's Herndon Va, Eldon street Jiffy Lube, for what it's worth. Like I said, it was a one time deal, mostly so I could get a bead on the undercarriage, and get the factory fill out of the thing before too many more miles elapsed.

From past experience, the Korean automakers are EXTREMELY difficult to deal with in terms of obtaining warranty, so consider yourself forewarned. They're the only ones that I know of who will send out a sample of your ATF upon transmission failure to check and see if you're indeed using the OEM SP-III as they supposedly using a chemical tracer in the fluid.

All of the Jiffy Lubes in this area are either using Pennzoil or Quaker State 5W20, 5W30, or 10W30. I've been to tons of quick lube shops that have ancient labels on their bulk dispensing areas simply because the techs are too lazy to update it with the new labels...after all, who cares for peeling off the old labels.

Conisdering the amount of oil Jiffy Lube goes through monthly, it is definitely API SM oil that they're using. If you're unsure, ask them for the date of their last bulk oil delivery. It was probably within a month or two, at most. IF you're still feeling uneasy, ask them for their bulk oil distributor (if they'll give it to you), and call them up.

Next time you should try Walmart Lube Express, but they've now risen the price of their basic Supertech Oil/Filter change to $17.

Just a point of order from five posts ago, it's not 1 3/4 turns of the filter once it hits the mount. It's 3/4 of a turn. Or, maybe one full turn. It just doesn't take that much to get it tight enough!

Interesting you ask me to ask. They didn't know what oil it was. Not the manager, the cashier, the guys in the bay didn't even speak English. They said they don't know what it is, they just put it in. When I asked them who makes J-L oil filters, they didn't know that either. When I asked them how they can put this stuff in people's cars and not even know who makes the oil, the grade of the oil, or the filters, how am I supposed to trust them with what they're doing, the gal actually told me, in front of a waiting area full of lemmings, "we just run em in and out, what we use is someone else's department." Man, if I was the customer with a Lexus, and another with a Tahoe in there for an oil change, I'd be getting a little nervous, but they all just sat there.

Ah well, so ends the J-Lube experience once again. Thanks for the tip about the oil, though, Michael. I feel a little better about it now, however irrationally. See ya!

Are Hyundai's tough on oil? If not, 3,750 mile OCI's with Mobil 1 seems like overkill to me. With short OCI's like that, I'd run Havoline/Chevron/Pennzoil/Castrol/etc. and be done with it. My $0.02
