Looking at how long you guys keep your full synthetic in an auto trans.

I am looking to replace the auto transmission fluid (pan drop to change filter and power flush to replace all fluid) in a 2004 chevy cavalier with Amsoil ATF.

I've been using the AMSOIL ATF for upto 100,000 miles, and it tested "suitable for continued use". That was a number of years ago. In normal duty, it should be good for at least 100,000 miles, in extremely heavy duty, probably a good idea to run an oil sample at 50,000 (or just replace it).

The 4T40E or 45E's are not too problematic. An excellent transaxle. From what I've seen, most outlive the car they are in w/ out ever having a service. Yours being a 2004 is probably the ideal time to do a pan drop, filter and fluid change. The majority of the wear materials will be collected on the pan magnet by now. You could swap over to Amsoil and leave it.

You have not mentioned the current history.

The safest way is to do a pan drop, replace filter and fill pan with Amsoil, then immediately purge the rest of the old ATF via the cooling line. Its the only cost effective way to do it when using ATF costing $8-$9/QT.

I think Amsoil can probably go 100K, but wear metals accumulate although the actual ATF may be fine. So two choices, either install a filter like a Magnefine or refresh the fluid every 25K with a couple of new quarts to get out the wear metals. The Magnefine filter is cheaper and better (at $15).

If it were me I would install the Magnefine filter run to 40K and sample for UOA, then decide what to do. The UOA is basically the price of 2 QTs of ATF (roughly) so it makes a lot of sense to do used oil analysis (more sense than to do used oil analysis for engine oil, just given the quantity.)

Drain and fill about 4 quarts of synthetic ATF each spring (before the summer heat arrives) during a LOF change. Yearly rotation of fluid keeps it fresh and gets the wear metals out to prolong transmission life. Preference is towards Amsoil.
