How long have you been a member?

The site was down for about three days. On the third day, I sent "admin" an email offering to help. That's when we moved from a flat-file Perl database to a real relational database - MySQL.

Could one really call mysql a "real" database though, like back in 2003? :) I remember some horror stories back then about it missing ACID compliance and also something about concurrency and table level locking. I know they fixed most of that a while back though.

I was always a psql guy.

Since Sept. 2002. Was #369 originally. Thought it was cool it's in the sequence of adding 3+3+3. I joined because I'd had it with dealership OCs. They'd forgotten to tighten the bolts on the skid plates so they rattled around, destroying the threads. They took care of it, but as I'd just bought a house, I was determined to do more DIY items to avoid those situations. I have used M1 oil in several weights since then. Redline (in the 93 truck) and Amsoil (in the 4R & 5.0) in everything else in the driveline barring the 5.0 which still has Motorcraft ULV in the trans.

Since 2020. I visited a few times before that when the site was still in the old format and then they switched to this and I liked it pretty well so I joined. I was also very bored during that time because work was slow because of the events at that time so I needed another automotive forum to be on with Garage Journal so here I am. I really enjoy it here. Hard to believe it’s been 5 years. Time really does fly.

MyISAM tables didn't have row level locking. BITOG would stall when someone did a big query. We have used InnoDB tables for about a decade, which have row level locking, are much more robust, and more great features. Modern MySQL is ACID compliant and incredibly reliable. The switch to InnoDB was absolutely necessary because our database is very large now. I remember converting the tables from MyISAM to InnoDB on the live database, that was some serious puckering.

20 years. Might have been some oddball URL. Might have been something like oildropserver or similar.
Does oildrop server101 com ring a bell? We switched all site data to bobistheoilguy.com in 2003 I believe.

Recall maybe "ubb" when going from the front page to the forums. But obviously the forum software has changed a bunch of times. A lot of the old threads look oddly formatted, quoting is hard to figure, etc. I looked it up and I think UBB stands for "ultimate bulletin board" where their most advanced software was UBB Threads. But XenForo is better in almost every way.

I remember reading in here in 2012 or 13 but didn't return until 2016 then began to look more frequently in 2018 I think and then I finally made an account in 2019 but didn't bother to post much for the first couple years.

2003 l believe. I still haven't eclipsed 1000 posts. Someone was promoting this site in the USENET automotive newsgroups. That's how l discovered the site. I was member #1156.
I had a front row seat for the AutoRX and German Castrol crazes.

Late 2003. I signed up while working late in my new office in Mountainview CA, after a short notice relocation. Stumbled across this site while researching oils for my new to me S2000. I have a tremendous memory for things like this...yet not for important matters :D
