How long does it take oil to thicken to

I think it's important for engine parts to be coated for cold starts.

At ambient temp 60f how long does it take for conventional oil to thicken to about 20cst@100c(50 weight) after I park the car?

5w-20 (hours, min)
5w30 (hours, min)
10w-40 (hours, min)

It will never do that.

Now if you mean 20cSt @ some lower temp...dunno. Look at the 40°C vis....draw a curve and dead reckon, depending on the ambient as well (three forms of heat loss.....) convection, radiant, and conduction......

Obviously I don't know how to word my question.

Using 5w-20 do you think cylinder walls, cam lobes and timing chain are coated after the car sits for 3 or 4 days? If not, will 5w30 or 10w-40 keep parts coated?

5W-20 drains completely off of all engine parts in 3 days, leaving your engine exposed to a dry start condition. OUCH!

I never heard an engine "dry start" until a couple nights ago. My old daytona hasnt been started since July 28....well until Thurs night. I decided to see if it could even start up anymore(transmission blew out and its all beyond repair). It started...and RATTLED! This engine sounds like it was gonna fly apart! Then it just shook while running. Revved it gently after a few minutes, it shook badly and stalled.

Never wanna hear that from an engine I am not comfortable with ending up in a yard.

If you are concerned about the wear of 20 vs a thicker oil I think its misguided. I think there will be little difference in "film" after a few days. But there will still be a very thin film in both cases, even if you can't "see" it (IMHO).

Besides you are starting with no load . so its no big deal.

It was running Castrol StartUp 10w30 with about 10oz of LC20 in it. And running a Supertech ST8A.

Death clatter would be the best way to describe it.

You will always have an oil film, albeit a thin film, unless the oil evaporates, and that would take a high temp.

After sitting the oil leaks from the hyd lifters chain tensioners etc so it takes a few seconds for the parts to "pump up" There is an oil film that fill the pores of the metal and the cross hatch in on the cyl walls .

I bet those parts pump up faster with with oil that flows fastest. Score one TD for 5w-20

Except for surfaces that may be machined to a mirror finish. Are cam lobes that smooth? I know I can see wear on a cam in my Ford.

May be, maybe not I have done enough valve adjusts to be able to say that oil pumps up real quick when using the starter motor to crank the engine even with 20w/50 at shop temps.

Sorry. but even the micro polished parts have pores. Don't confuse a "rough finish" with pores.
