I been busy lately, anyway my brother come up to me, asking me to change his oil for him on his 2000 bmw 328ci, I rememember last oil change I did for him, so I look at the old oil filter box that I wrote down the date and miles on last oil change, I ALMOST JUMP OUT THE SEAT, CAUSE its almost 12 full month and almost 7k miles.

, I been really busy with life, so im totally forget about him all those time.

last oil change I did it with 7 quart mobil 1 0w40 with factory BMW oil filter ( brand is manth something, its in green box ).

so I went advance auto part and get the factory oil filter, they say they no longer can order that factory filter any more. only one left that they have availible is BOSH filter beside FRAM. so I pick up the BOSH filter with mobil 1 0w40.

today I change the oil for him, and take out the factory BMW filter, man that thing look like it can go another year, very well build. oil came out not very dark looking either, but after I change the oil for him, he drove home, he call me, he say, the car feel alot more smooth LOL

now I wonder with bosh oil filter, how long it can last him, he daily drive, alot city and alot highway.

How many qts does that thing take? It seems the general concensus is that 7k miles on a name-brand synthetic over a 1 yr time period is not that big of a deal for a modern car in good running order and normal to moderate driving situations.

What does BMW recommend as the interval for the car?

Which Bosch filter? I believe they have 2 (or more....) "product lines" they basic, and a "Distance" and a "Distance Plus" but I could be mistaken.....

Depending on how the internals are of his engine....I'd think the filter should be able to go at least 10k.....but really, may as well change the filter out at each OCI...unless you are paying big bucks for say, a Royal Purple, or "K&N" oil filter.....those could likely go at least 20k - but again, I'd think it would depend on how the engine/internals are wearing. Low wear numbers would indicate less problem of a filter becoming "full" and going into bypass mode.

You can't always tell just by looking at it, how much "life" is left on a filter...heh.

that small engine take 7 quart, and I have no idea what the factory interval is, most bmw owner i knew oil change 1 a year.

Factory interval is up to 15K miles.

I've ran mine up to 10K miles without any problems. 7K miles is playing it very safe. Definitely no reason for concern, neither for the oil nor the filter.

That Mann filter is very good. I just got another one from Amazon for under $7. Autohausaz has them for $5.50 but you need to order at least $50 to get free shipping. Mahle-Knecht filters are also very good but a bit more $ - they use plastic end caps as opposed to cellulose molded caps on the Mann.

If it is a Austrian or German made Mahle it is probably one of the very best constructed oil filters you can buy at any price for any car.

For my VW the Mahle OC47 is only about 4.50 at most on line stores and they are worth the extra 50 cents over the typical Fram [censored] and then some.

How do Manns compare? My BMW e30 has OEM Mahle, $5 filter. It is very solid, and I have an extra to be used for next time.

But Mann is also very nice. I hear rumors they are USA made now... could be a bad thing.

White MANN filters in a green and yellow box are just relabeled Purolator Classics, nothing more. That's a fine filter but don't spend any more for the MANN name.

Black MANN filters are 'genuine' European made filters and are supposedly high quality.

Also, Bosch Premium filters are basically PureONEs with rubber bits instead of silicone, and no grippy coating. The Distance Plus is its own design internally (high efficiency AND high capacity) and does not have a Purolator-labeled equivalent.

I have black mahle ones, one on the auto and one waiting for my next oil change. Yet, I will be ordering Mann next time. $4.50 all day long for a filter? CHEAP

Mobil 1 0W40 is probably the best oil that Mobil makes. Sleep well my friend. Here are some UOAs for BMWs using it:

These are the first four-five I could find. Perhaps there are bad UOAs somewhere for this oil, but the ones I remember seeing all looked good.
