I've been going back and fourth with upgrading to a new cellular phone, but then I have second thoughts because of $199 price. I always wondered if most people upgrade once their contract expires.

My cell phone annoys me, so I leave it home more than I bring it with me.
So, basically, I run them until they are damaged or destroyed then get a new one.

We didn't want any of the trappings. Until we both tried the iPhone last year. We're hooked.

The Android/HTC options are very tempting and probably a notch better than the iPhone in many areas.

If you don't mind spending the extra $$ every month, it sure is convenient to be able to take care of your computing needs on the go...

Yes, worth the upgrade. Technology changes so fast in this market space that a 2 year old phone is often obsolete.

My cell is about 10 years old. i hate phones to begin with, so spending money on them is not something i do. I think i use maybe 10 minutes a month at the most.

We upgraded last year to a Palm. I like the flip phone LG we had before. It is too expensive to get internet access, I just use the phone as a phone. I'm always by a computer with internet access anyway. I wish I hadn't upgraded.

IT takes me along time to upload my outlook address book and get accustomed to a new phone. My phone is a company phone anyhow and I won't be purchasing my own. I hate the "leash"

TracFone is the lowest cost. You can get basic units at WallMart, or go on their web site and get a fancy model. Still lowest cost compared to others. Also TracFone is low in cost for your yearly service and air time. You might e-mail them and ask if there are any introduction specials.

Agree with the loading of life on a phone....

I wouldn't have to pay extra per month for the newer phone. I have an ancient plan from T-Mobile that gives me 1000min unlimited text and data for 59.99. If I move to another provider or change my contract it will be 49.99 + $30 for data and whatever for text msg. The new data plans are outrageous. My current plan is meant for a Black Berry but I use it with a smart phone that gives me free unlimited 3G data. It's a nice loop hole.

What is a cell phone contract?

I haven't had one for at least 7 years and my cell phone works just fine.

It means that you sign another 2 year contract to get a good discount on the new phone. You can't break the contract, or you will be penalized an early termination fee just like when you first initiated the plan at day one. In my case it would me a $200 fee. Some providers have higher early termination fees. I'm not in a contract right now because my initial 2 years expired several months ago, so now I'm on month to month. I can leave anytime without a penalty. The only way I can continue to be month to month is to pay the full retail price of the phone which is $500 or buy it on ebay. If I do another 2 year contract it will be $199. If I chose to leave it will end up being $400, which ultimately ends up being around the full price of the phone

All I want from a cellphone is one that doesn't break. My work cell phone is this piece of garbage LG LX150 and I've busted the screen on it about 5 times now (I've been buying replacements on Ebay and cannibalizing them for parts). This phone was apparently free with the contract. It feels cheap, looks cheap, works cheap and it'll break if you look at it wrong.

My personal phone is a Nokia flip/camera phone I got off Ebay for $20 to replace the Nokia candy bar phone I had before. The previous Nokia lasted almost 5 years before it started flaking out. The LG was flaky from day one. It actually sometimes just reboots for no apparent reason.

So the executive summary:

Nokia = Good.
LG = Lousy Garbage.

It's one of the least important things in my life. There's one feature that might actually be worth it. The monthly GPS feature. If you plot your personal obsolescence time line on a dedicated GPS, you're probably doing better paying monthly for the service. That you would be upgrading with your phone which you probably do at near the same frequency.

Not very. Don't get me wrong. I would not be without a cell phone but I want a phone to do one thing only and that is for voice communication. Not interested in music, camera phones, texting, etc, etc. Doubt that cell phones will do what digital imaging has done and moved me back into film based photography for the serious stuff.

I find the camera phone to be moderately useful, but only because I can send the images to a bluetooth equipped PC, and because I like to take pictures of things that need fixing and email them to people who would otherwise ignore them.

I like to have a camera in a phone to capture those moments you aren't expecting. Came in handy a few years ago after someone smacked my then wife's car.

The phone I've got now is 2 years old but money is tight so I'm holding on to it. All the new wizbang phones do neat stuff but you'll go into the poor house paying for the service. About the only thing I use the net for on my phone is to check movie times...maybe about 3 times a month.

Fairly. I haven't had mine for a year and I am considering an early upgrade already.

$200 may be a lot of money, but that is the equivalent of not eating out for a few months (or less). What's more important to you-- a new phone or spending money on other forms of entertainment?
