How Important is a New Cell Phone To You?

I dont do contracts. I simply bought a phone at WalMart and signed up for the $45 Unlimited Talk/Text/Data Straight Talk Plan. It uses the Verizon System.

Eh, I keep my phones till they break. I usually use LG phones as they can take a beating, have had 3 phones, a old LG phone that lasted me 6 years till the battery died and I could not find a replacement the next one lasted 4 years, got washed in the washer once, and I broke that one running it over by accident doing an oil change. I have a LG chocolate 2 now and it is 5 years old now, still working like new. I do not plan on getting another till this one fails. Ofcourse will be getting another LG. I do not care for all the fancy booloney thats out there I use the phone for one thing, talking, No texting, no music, no videos, no apps.

the value of not having a leash = priceless.

I get a new cell phone every 18 months when I'm eligible for an upgrade. Since I use it alot, it is important to get a nice one. So I guess I would say pretty good. I've had mostly Samsung phones, and I'm very happy with them.

I don't have a cell phone, once in a while it would be handy but usually that is due to poor planning.
Sometimes when I'm about to impulse shop, a phone with internet capabilities would be nice to check out the ratings and competitive pricing for a product, but not having that option has probably saved me alot of money over the years.

Personally I'd rather save up a lifetime of cell bills and buy a fun car or retire a year early...

Rarely, if ever. It's only recently that I've had a contract again.

I'm not a big talker on a cell phone, so for years we went with T-Mobile prepaid. Phones are cheap and would get topped up every 9 - 12 months with a single $100 refill (1000 minutes, often available from callingmart or others for $90, all calls are 10¢/min).

Now that we frequently find ourselves at a place with no phone / interweb access, we decided to take the plunge and get a smartphone. While I really enjoy being able to check my email frequently & access the internet from a handheld device, on a day to day basis it isn't needed. Before if I were out and about but needed some information off the internet, I'd call up a friend and ask them to look it up quickly for me. 40¢ for that call once in a while is MUCH cheaper than $80/mo for most smartphone plans.

+1

All I use the cell phone is for calls that are important and texting in lieu of the voicemail. I buy a new cell phone when my battery dies.

I use a phone that's provided by my employer. Its free to me, and since its a "business" phone it behooves me not to make many personal calls on it. I make perhaps two a month.

Its the perfect phone for me.

I'm not concerned about cell phone rf radiation, but since you asked what the differences are...

Routers have lower transmit power and normal people don't spend hours with their router held against their head.

RF strength is inversely proportional to the square of the distance, so even a few inches as opposed to being in contact with the device makes a BIG difference.

From what I remember cell phone RF power is capped at 2W, and if you have good signal where you are it can be as low as 0.5W. Usually router has 100mW (0.1w) or less output power.

Either way, the EM wave is usually not cancer causing and the most it can do (in physics, not statistic collected by radio phobics) is that it may warm you up. The 2.4GHz from wifi and blue tooth is what your microwave oven uses to heat your food, but they are in the 1000w range rather than 0.1w range, so imagine how much heat it takes to cook your brain and how much your cell phone in the worst case frequency can cook your brain.

Not much, you get more brain damage from sun bathing than this.

I don't have or want a cell phone, I don't even want people to phone me on my land line. If it's not worth THEIR time to email me, so I can read their message in MY time, I proberbly won't care about what they have to say anyway.
People tend to be more concise about what they have to say if the have to write it.
Wife wants us to have cell phones so she can call me at work
