How do you check for spark?

I take the spark plug out and put it in the cable. Sit the plug end on a grounded part of the engine and have someone turn it over. You can also purchase a piece that goes between the plugs and wires that displays the spark.

using a spare spark plug lessens the chance of getting zapped, and of letting too much voltage build up, but a screwdriver will work.

I used my fingers to check for leaky ign wires, and found it works very well. There's no need to buy fancy indicators when your own nervous system has them built in.

I have a spark sensor. It is a blue point (Snap-on Brand) item. It is sat on the wire and it lights up with each pulse.

Common item, I believe.

I fold one end of a paper clip out to make a pointer, then I insert the remaining portion of the clip into the plug boot making contact with the copper teminal. I then grasp the boot and hold the pointer about 1/8 inch from some kind of good ground while I crank over the starter with a remote starter or a person in the driver's seat.

Just pull off one spark plug wire. Have your wife hold the spark plug wire with one hand and put her other hand on the fender. Turn the engine over and she will tell you if there is a spark.

It works better if the guy does this and puts his zipper against the fender while she cranks the engine.

You have to lick your fingers first ...

I check for spark differently on a lawnmower, automotive coil on plug system, waste spark system, or distributor based system.
Do you have a particular system that needs a method?
