How come some people work all the time?

I know some people it seems like they're always working constantly and it's not because they have to it's like that's just what they enjoy doing I guess. I suppose I could understand since I find myself happiest when I'm working. My guess is it keeps my mind occupied and off other things and the constant movement just makes me feel good. Opinions?

I think you just answered your own question.

I work lots lately because I get paid time and a half or double time depending on the situation for any hours after 8 every day.
I want to buy certain things, so I work more.

I don't love working for the record. I love the things in life outside of work. Work is just a means..

Because they find all the loopholes and know how to get free handouts on almost anything?

Some people are just built that way.

But let's not fall into the trap of thinking that quantity equals quality.

I know lots of people who do 12 hour days, but don't produce much.

And then there's people who only work 4 hours a day but get a LOT done.

I work all the time because my job position requires it (I work in a STEM field). I love my job but it is probably too much work for the salary (not OT)...

When my wife and I were first starting out we put in a huge about of time building our careers and business. There were plenty of 12-14 hour days, and we knew that it would pay off in the future.

Now that she's of counsel and my software company was sold years ago, we work quite a bit today because we both like to work, be productive, and try different things. We work because we enjoy what we do, not because we have to work. Neither of us are the "retire and golf" types, so we started other businesses together; I've been active in local politics and my wife is still on a couple of corporate boards as well as being of counsel. Both of us choose to live productive lives rather than sit around doing nothing.

Most of the folks around here have a strong work ethic, which (in my opinion) goes along with a farming/rural background.

reality is with a job that requires you work forty hours if you are working more you need to assess what you are doing wrong and improve your time management skills or other times perform better work. Most people I know who do 40hrs + have time management issues, personal issues, or need to perform that in order to make themselves look better in front of peers. I don't like it when my software developers make it a regular thing because honestly after 6-7 hrs of work the returns diminishes fast and hard.

I spoke to my neighbor who never worked more then 45 hrs a week as he felt exercise, family and other pursuits led to his successful. His success was a software company acquired by Seimens for mere $35 million.

You are assuming of course correct job design, position descriptions and scheduling...only then does it become an individual's shortcoming.

I work everyday and have been doing so for 30 some years. I get 3 hours of sleep and am back at it. I do enjoy work but I use it as pain management. Keeps my mind busy and thus reduces pain. Plus it helps pay my astronomical medical bills. In my situation it's fight it or die. To me a busy mind is a happy mind.

I work only because I have to. I have a little less than 4 years left until I can retire (I'm eligible at age 62), and I will retire one day after my 62nd birthday...I'm ready now...

+1,000%! That's why my job sucks like a Dyson.

And then there are those of us who own and run businesses. 40 hr work week is not in the cards. For many small business owners, double that and you have a normal work week. But then, if we didn't enjoy it, and there was no appreciable reward for doing it, we wouldn't have started small businesses to begin with. And retirement is something that some of us don't really anticipate with joy. Even in retirement, those of us that have been playing the business game will probably still keep our hand in the game until we just plain can no longer work. I probably won't file for SSI till I bump 70. But that is not that far off and I have no interest in stopping what I am doing until I can no longer work.

There are a lot of minimum wage or low wage families that work long hours to provide for their families. These are the invisible heroes of the American dream. They are often ridiculed in popular culture.
