Anyone else who's self employed got burned a lot this year collecting payments?

Credit card dispute most likely. Gets taken back immediately while they investigate and they usually side with the customer. I do a couple a year, usually no questions asked.
I dunno. I am not up to date on that stuff. Cost me a condenser, compressor, accumulater,Orifice tube,4 cans of brake cleaner,9oz pag oil,34oz of r134a and 1/2 days labor plus electricity.

I should have disputed my hvac guy. $1500 to change out a $100 Condensor fan

I was doing AC work at home. Had a guy pay through zell. Then he somehow sucked back his payment, wont answer the phone etc.

I quit doing AC on the side for now as that was a big loss for me.
I have seen some small businesses offer discounts on invoiced bills if you pay in 15 days vs 20 0r 30days as usual.

A cash on the spot discount is often a great idea, and should be on the order of 15-20%. Solves a lot of problems. In the end, nearly all businesses have some form of loss they must account for in the pricing structure. A cash payment on the spot eliminates that customer as a problem.

If 10% fail to pay, this raises everyone's cost by 11.2%, as we must remember the burden is spread on the 90% remaining.

Some thoughts, service industries may see 15% non payment rates, healthcare as much as 30% now.

Chris, I'm sorry you had such a big loss, that infuriates me. If this was recent, continue to invoice the guy, with interest and late fees. Complain to Venmo, start a viable paper trail. I know how I feel about such things and I'd be fantasizing about liberating some freon via the wireless hole puncher.

I remember with my hvac guy I use, I installed a 5 ton hvac system in my shop with about 30ft spiral ductwork. I think I may have signed an agreement before they even showed, but I didn't pay a dime until the job was done. Actually, I paid them and they still had like 2hrs of work left. The owner of the company who was there gave me a cash discount and waited until the workers were at lunch to take my money. He didn't even count it lol. He's like I'm not counting this and left with his money and the workers finished up and left a couple hours later. I was kind of surprised I didn't have to atleast pay for parts upfront. Pretty sure he just didn't want his employees to see the transaction, but maybe him getting it 90 percent done and then asking for payment was his way of making sure he got paid.
