How can castrol claim this?

The aussie Castrol site has an MSDS that indicates that Magnatec 0W40 is composed of "Severely Refined Petroleum Distillates" and performance additives".
That sounds like "hydrocracked" i.e., group III.

Brian,
Nope, Magnatec SP 5W-40, BP Visco 5000 5W-40 and Shell Helix are all labelled full synthetics, while being GrIII.

My bad! But in Germany, it's Magnatec9. I wonder if there's a difference between the two. My only point I was making in the other thread was if it was group III and V in the US, it seemed illogical that Castrol wouldn't call it synth. You actually help make that point b/c it seems anything they have w/ group III gets labled synth anywhere they can get away with it. It seems...

I spent an evening with one of the Oz engineers who worked on the magnatec "UMA" esters.

He was explaining the testing process on the engines:
* baseline oil (they used M1 5W-50);
* flushing oil;
* test oil;
* flushing oil;
* baseline oil.

Repeat if necessary.

With the magnatecs, he stated that the flushing oil, AND the baseline oils performed better after magnatec.

He had nothing to gain in his discussions, as he was moving to be chief chemist at a new place.

I'm still suprised that Castrol aren't marketting all of the magnatecs as a Semi-synth, given that they contain esters and stuff.

I would guess that is 100% Castrol bull***t. Castrol, show us the UOA or independent test reports.

It's marketing guys. Watch the oil commercials during your favorite game on TV. There is no need for facts when words will cover you. It's sort of an original sin kinda thing.

Most humans do it. Including ALL the oil companies.

And we wonder why BITOG has 13,000 members.

No I'm not saying anything is wrong with Castrol.

same way they claim that their Castrol oil now makes more hp than their leading competitors. How they get away with it is anyone's guess, just the way marketing goes I guess.

I've really been wondering why Frank hasn't put out a warning against using Magnatec, since it's at the very least a semi synth in disguise.

remember gents, some euro vehicles use a positive ground electrical systems. there may be some validity to castrol's claim. this may explain the late campaign to enter the U.S. market. this oil would "cling" to euro spec production vehicles but not our homegrown variety!
