How big is your stash, hoarders?

5 qts Supertech 5w30 synthetic high mileage. Once that's gone my oil hoarding days are over. I maintain 4 vehicles right now and I'm just going to let walmart store my oil.

I always keep enough oil good for 2 years as I buy it when on sale, I don't think it'll go bad if you use it within 5 years from manufacture. What I do before I open a bottle is I turn it upside down and shake it a bit so if any additives fell out to the bottom they get back suspended in the oil.

Yes, but it’s more about the life of the additives in the oil. A climate controlled environment helps. If you keep your oil in the garage (non climate controlled like mine) about one to two years a safe bet. You can go more but it’s just a guessing game on how long it will last without proper testing. I don’t go over six months personally. Not worth it to me.

An aside: “excessive” oil hoarding is more or less just a shopping hobby/addiction. It is not a long term financial plan or something to add to one’s portfolio as some around here seem to treat it. If you need to add your oil stash to your estate plan you have a shopping problem. It’s no different than a person with 200 shoes.

1 gal Delo 400 XSP Motor Oil 5W40
2 5qt Castrol Euro 5w40
1 5qt Quaker State Full Synthetic Euro 5w40
Now I did stock up on ATF for my Honda.
6 gal of Idemitsu Type H Plus left

My stash is down to 333 quarts. My top 3 largest holdings are:

1. 64 qts of Castrol Edge 5W-30 (from 2022 Tractor Supply clearance, came out to nearly free after rebates),
2. 53 qts of Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage (various viscosities, almost all of it was free after rebate)
3. 42 qts of Amazon Basics 0W40 (bougt at $6.80 per jug)

So if I store them in my bedroom closet. Climate controlled all year between 65-75 degrees, I should be good? I dont have alot but AA accidentally sent me 48 quarts and I only ordered 12. Total I have around 60 quarts, with a fleet of 3 vehicles. But we only average 6-9k miles per year.

I must confess, I have 93 quarts in my stash. 83 quarts of Havoline Conventional 5w30, and 10 quarts of Havoline Lifelong Full Synthetic 0w20. After I go through the 83 quarts of 5w30 conventional, I'll replace it with Havoline Lifelong Full Synthetic 5w30. I figure that will take me about another 2 to 3 years.

But why is there a need to hoard large amounts of motor oil? If supplies of motor oil were to disappear, gasoline and diesel would disappear first.

I buy my oil as I need it. Never understood hoarding it. A few clicks on my Amsoil account and its sent to my door in a few days. At most I have a change or two of extra oil at a time because I usually get a case for a discount. But makes no sense to hoard oil in my opinion. Plus I don’t have all the extra room for that either.

With an oil change costing $80-120 now days I don’t have to worry. Most of my oils cost $1-2qt on sale and I have enough for 5-7 years of oil changes for my 3 cars….and family and friends. Now having said this, I haven’t purchased any oil for the last 4 years. I just bought my hoard at really cheap prices and stopped.
