hours or mileage

3,500 miles seems like really short interval with M1. Valvoline recommends 3,000 miles OCI for conventional oils under severe duty cycle assumption. I'd use M1 until 5,000 miles, then send a sample of UOA.

While I agree that using fuel burned is a good OCI indicator, I'm wondering where the 300 number came from?

Just a round number I picked based on most manufacturer's recommended OCI. No formal calculations to it.

300*(20 to 30MPG) yields 6000-9000Miles which corresponds to most manuals. Most cars with higher MPG do seem to recommend higher OCIs, which lends some correlation to this single-variable indicator.

Makes sense as fuel takes into account both the leadfooted or idling driver vis-a-vis engine use, something that neither miles/hours takes into account.

If you need to do this calculation back-of-the-envelope, then take miles and divide by whatever you estimate is your MPG. Will act as a correction factor between those "hard" miles versus the "gentle" miles.

that's an interesting little factoid, never thought of it that way.at roughly 12G a fill up that would be 25 tanks.
checked oil tonight getting dark and down a touch.

BTW 300gallons was just a random starting point i picked from the top of my head don't take it as some kind of rule.
If you are here, you are a picky person, so maybe 284gallons is the right number for you, or 314. maybe 323.4

Understood. I was just curious if maybe you got this number from one of the car manufacturers.

For example, the OCI in my 530i is based on amount of fuel burned, but the number is much higher. It is 2375 liters which is 627 gallons. Based on some UOAs that I've done, this number is a bit too high for my liking, despite the fact that the engine has a decent sized oil sump capacity. My average MPG is about 24. 627 x 24 = roughly 15K miles.

Prior to OLM on our work vans we used 400 gallons of fuel burned as this number was provided by the upfitter who works closely with GM.

Much of our vans operation is stationary at 1500-1700 rpm. Thus the odometer is even worse than usual as an indicator for service.

just a quick update
been very busy w/work so it didn't go to the dealer like I intended. took it to the place I was taking the last 2 cars. they do gas, oil, car wash and have regular mechanics too, all Mobil products.
changed out FF at 3610 w/185 hrs and did a bulk 5/20 but don't like the filters they're using. going to pick up some from dealer or e-bay.
