got a 2012 KIA forte to replace my Sable for work.
It doesn't have an OLM but it has an engine "timer" if you will.will see if it's resettable after the first change.you guys know where I'm going here so I don't have to spell it out.
right now it has 1700 mi/89hrs on the FF. going to dump it at 100hrs and most likely fill w/M1 5/20 although the book says I can use anything from 5/20 to 10/30.
this is mixed bag driving in and around NYC area. some days it'll see 20mi others 200mi.will also sending to Blackstone on occasion just to keep an eye on FD as it's a DI engine.

That gives an average speed of 19 mph, which would indicate a lot of time spent in heavy traffic. I'm tempted to classify this as severe service.

What kind of OCI does the owner's manual call for?

3500/7500
thing gets pretty good mileage too. been averaging 23 so far.can't wait to put it on a real highway run just to see what it'll do.

That's neat. I'm still surprised KIA/Hyundai haven't jumped on the OLM bandwagon

Perhaps they have more "faith" in their customers as "other" auto manufacturers for timely OCIs....? Thus, no need for a red blinky light to tell the operator when to change and/or check the oil.?

Good catch on that "average mph" though! hah.....but really, that's "acceptable" i'd say.....since it is a new car...it's likely only gotten a couple "test drives" and shuffled around the dealer lot a couple times

I'd still follow the manufacturer "break in procedure" though..have faith in the factory fill, and change it as specified.....no need to change out good oil....we all know they lube these things up good with assembly lube during assembly....

Im not real clear if 19 mph is close to your average or due to idling around the lot at the dealer. At any rate I concur with the 100 hour breakin change.

According to Ford 1 hour of idle is equal to 33 miles of driving in a gasoline engine (Test on Crown Vic Police Cars)

7500 miles would be 150 hours at 50 mph.
3500 miles would be 150 hours at 23 mph.

150 x 33 (Idle equivalent) = 4950 miles.

150 x 19 (your average) = 2850 miles

Im thinking 150 hours or 5000 miles whichever occurs first on conventional. 250 hours or 7500 whichever occurs first on M1. However that would be contingent on the fact that the oil wasnt loading up with gas under your driving conditions like some DI engines do. If you have fuel dilution issues I would move up to 5W30 and use conventional at 100 hours or 3500 miles whichever occurs first.

The problem with that is that Hyundai/Kia has been telling people that 0W20 is not acceptable. I dont understand their reasoning but it isnt worth the warranty hassle if you have a claim.

Is it the turbo engine? If so, 0w-20 does not have enough HT/HS to adequately protect it.

I bought the car w/12 miles on it so it's all mine.
engine is 2.0 NA.
I am aware of the no 0/20. as most of you know I use AMS 10/30 ACD in my other 3 but since this is a warranty thing.
guess I'll let it go to 150H/3500 whatever comes first to do change.
I will be checking for fuel dilution on the next run. will also pickup some factory filters once I have a part number.
dealer will most likely do the first OC so it can have a going over.
thanks for the input, any other thoughts?

well I found out today that the engine timer rolls over at 100 hrs. I think that sucks, whats the point if it rolls over after 100hrs. same thing w/trip odometer, that rolls at 1K.
I know that the trip in the 00 RAV will go out to 10K maybe more, never tried it.
I just think it kind of defeats the purpose of putting things like this in from a maintenance point of view. think I'll bring this up when I go to the dealer.

Time is good IMO as a measure, calendar time too, mileage as long as what sort of mileage, and some of the "fuel consumed" calculators.

If I had an hour meter, I'd probably use that in preference.

Does this car have a trip computer that shows avg speed since last reset? If so, all you need to do is take the miles driven since last oil change/reset and divide it by the avg speed to get the hours.

Pete
yes, yes it does. it has 2 trip ODO's, resettable average speed and MPG.
it would be nice to see total time on the engine vs mileage as far as how it's driven.guess I'll be doing it the old fashion way.

I use: capacity x mpg x tbn x constant.

I use 10 as the constant in most applications but it would vary depending on the particular engine and tbn retention curve of the particular lubricant.

According to Ford, an average speed of 25 mph or less is considered severe service. Ford recommends an OCI of 200 hrs in severe service.

While I agree that using fuel burned is a good OCI indicator, I'm wondering where the 300 number came from?

well thats good to know. going to stick to the 3500m/150h plan for now until I get a read on the oil.
oh and the timer is resettable.
