Had a nice stay at Hotel Dauphine several yrs ago similar to what you discussed here several years ago. Great staff, close to transit to explore the city. Very enjoyable.

I remember when Flagler was old Florida. Wasn't that long ago.
I stayed one night in Melbourne on the way to Miami. Wow has that place changed and not for the better. Over-run is how I would describe it.

I hear a bunch of rift raft from Maryland is moving into Florida these days....I have stayed at a lot of posh hotels on other peoples dime - work things, conferences, trade shows. Not as much recently as those things have died out, but in the past. Places like the Hotel Del Coronado. Yes, very nice place, but in the end it was just a hotel room. I wouldn't make a huge effort to go back even if it was cheap, which it was not. I think a lot of it is so you can tell people you have been - like paying $1000 for a certain sneaker - its the status symbol not the product.
Possibly one exception being the Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans. Every tiny detail is perfect, from the room to the bartender to the mixed drinks. Reminds me of the old South which is slowly going away. Pay for a Premium level floor which gives you access to the top floor lounge whose finger food offering at high tea is "complimentary" and not to miss, and I am not a tea kinda guy.
The only hotel I have interest in is maybe the Breakers for its historical significance. Maybe I'll just stop in for coffee some day.
In my very first job I used to go to California quite a bit. Late 90's. Florida now reminds me a lot of California then. Crowded everywhere, couldn't find a native Californian to save your life. Back then it was still a retirement destination for many.
I guess we will see where Florida goes.

One advantage of a hotel is it appears safer on the surface and you're never alone. Of course we all remember @Cujet sad affair...
When I rent a house I arrive near midnight by myself to a usually unknown address until the night before. So I don't know the area or neighborhood. I have to scope out the house and make sure it is secure. I redo the bedding with my own and several other things.
I also do a cell scan for hidden cameras and listening devices... Yes a necessary evil...
I have met a bunch of great people at hotels.... but I like the ability to cook, washing dry clothes, and all the extras a house offers...

I got a room yesterday after 3pm
Dropped off my luggage and came back at 8 pm after working on the house.
Walked in the door and roaches were running around .. a foreign thing for me. This dump was highly rated too, no doubt all relatives.
I went to the office and dropped off the key
and left.. didn't ask for a refund...nothing..
That place was a total dump and no, not cheap.

Turned off and when I walked in it had to be over 100 degrees easily.
It had an overwhelming smell too..not sure what but it did

I visit family 3-4x/yr. in the Denver metro area. With family in Castle Rock and Lakewood, our usually choice of hotels is half-way in-between in Highlands Ranch (SW Denver).
Typically, having Hilton and IHG status, I'll stay at a Hampton Inn or Staybridge Suites. Both have a nice breakfast buffet, and the IHG has free laundry for longer (and hotter month) stays. That said, last time I stayed at the Hampton Inn, which has 6 stories, I found out after checking-in that it was under-going a remodel of all the rooms, starting with the 5th and 6th floors, which they conveniently mentioned on a paper notice in the elevator. Ok, so the clerk puts us in the 4th floor, and the construction is allowed from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.
Welp, we gutted-it out, but on the most recent visit, I selected a Home2Suites instead. I'll say this - the building was built well. Must have have been concrete walls and floors for the four stories, because despite being close to C470, we slept good.
So even though you can have your favorite hotels for stays near family (we never stay WITH family), always check prior to making that reservation for "gotchas" like remodelling, close-proximity highway construction, etc.

Went to Charlotte with the wife a month ago. Had the wife look through hotel reviews- booked a staybridge - 4.3/5 on Google, glowing reviews. Place was a threadbare worn out smelly dump. Awful. Luckily only 1 night.
Second night decided I was crossing back over state lines to South Carolina hoping for better out of the city. Wanted to stay at a Courtyard I had seen on a previous trip but not stayed. Wife looked at reviews and there were many negatives. Decided to chance it - place was absolutely spotless. Have added it to our favorite's list which is pretty short.
I think Hotel reviews must be run by Amazon.
