How do you live?

Truthfully.....I know more children of "privledge" that grew up to be bums or dead, than I do those from the "other side of the tracks"

Sometimes, our hopes and dreams for our children are horribly and tragically "misplaced".

Not the only way, but it basically lets hardship do the parenting for you, which is good I suppose. I mean, you COULD spend your daughter's formative years teaching her how to responsibly manage money so that when the time comes she is able to take advantage of the blessings your life has provided so that she never has to make the compromises and sacrifices that you faced, or you could kick her out and make her struggle in the same way that you have. Obviously the latter is much easier.

Agreed. My parents paid for 100% of my college education. Am I "spoiled" because of it? No. I like nice things and have been able to afford some nice things at an early age because of the financial position they put me in. For that I am very grateful.

Some will surely take this the wrong way, but IMO parents arent doing their kids any favors by sending them off on their own at 18. It creates extra years of hardship, which is exactly what they should NOT want. There IS a difference between teaching frugality, hard work and respect for money, and just throwing dollars at the kids. It is easiest to just throw dollars or completely stop providing any dollars, but the best lessons are when long-term smarts are engrained early under the financial comfort and stability of parents. It is just tougher to do, so many choose not to.

$15K horse, college and medical paid for by tax payers, 20 days vacation from day one.... She's got it real rough.

Yes I know all the Dave Ramsey fans are shuddering right now.

But if I'm buying groceries, paying my utilities, etc with a card and paying it in full each month, that extra $1K or so at the end of the year makes for some nice, stress free Christmas shopping money.

Dave Ramsey fans are already fools who never knew anything about managing money though

it IS the lucky country.

We live in a small house, drive cars paid for in cash (cheap insurance), eat on our budget and dress the kids in what we can afford to put them in.

We don't "keep up with the jonses" yet...we'd be insane to even try. Wife goes to school for Biochemistry half-time, I work full time, and the rest of the time seems to get eaten up dealing with the kids functions, keeping up with the house, etc.

We won't celebrate until she's done with school. I've gotten myself into "large" (to me) amounts of debt trying to live with everything I "wanted". It took me using most of my inheritance after mom died paying that off to realize just how stupid that was.
