Hi

I am draining the 5speed transmission fluid out of my 00 civic,
the summer months are coming , and a friend of mine , uses 75w-90 gear lube in his honda transmission case, and says it shifts better than when he had the honda MTF.....

are there any long term effects to using 75w-90 in a honda manu transmission,

most other auto manu reccomend this grade, or auto transmission fluid....

i called a dealer and they said that 5w or 10w30 oil would be fine to use...... the closest honda dealer is too far to drive just for $7/litre of honda MTF..... they reccomended engine oil....

i think engine oil would thin out too much in the summer heat....

are there any long term effects to using 75w-90 gear oil ??????

I don't know first hand but I do hear good things about Redline MTL and Hondas. If you look at the Honda MTF VOA it does have the viscosity of a 30-weight motor oil (Visc@100C - 11.26) and MTL does fit the viscosity profile. Personally, I don't feel comfortable using motor oil in a gear lube application.

I wouldn't do it ... I heard the same question asked in a Honda PACT transmission course and the instructor stated it was a bad thing ... inference was it would lead to premature failure.

I wouldn't use 75w90 in a Honda transmission. My Civic and CRX both specify 10w30. I've used RedLine MTL in both of them for a few years with no ill effects and improved cold weather shifting.

nicholas, some of the less-expensive GL-5 75W90 and 80W90 gear oils could have EP additives in them which would chemically attack the daintier parts of your synchromesh transmission, specifically the synchros.

Not sure what effect this could have over the long term ... but why take the chance? Stick with a GL-4 fluid.

I'm with Bogatyr. I've used nothing but Red Line MTL in Honda 5-speeds and have been very pleased with the stuff, especially in the cold.

The Red Line synchromesh fluids are good for 30,000-40,000+ miles no problem. MTL is 70W80 and MT-90 is 75W90.

Do a search in this gear oil subforum using the word "Honda" and you'll see 3+ threads discussing this topic in greater detail.

Have used Redline MTL for years in my Accord. Shifts good and is quiet. If Honda calls for a 10Wxx weight, then stay with it. Mine calls for a 10W40 wt. oil in the gear box...
