I was concerned about using 5w30 in a vehicle that calls for 5w20, specifically a 08 Mazda CX-9 w/ 85k mi, until I compared oils and the RP HPS 5w20 I was using was 50.8/8.9 and the Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage 5w30 I was looking to use was 55.6/10.1. Practically the same in my opinion. Of course, maybe if you were considering GC 0w30 it may be a different story.

I use 5w30 in all of my Honda/Acura's. The 3.5L V6 in my TL and 3.0L in the Accord Hybrid.
My son uses 5w30 in his 2003 civic v-tech with no problems after his head gasket went at 98,000 miles he now has around 120,000 miles and it runs good on 5w30 pennzoil

Just look at the coolants. Most coolant recommendations must be one of the most vague ones found in the owner's manual. They usually read something like "use ethylene glycol". Yet there is a terrible fear out there of using non dealer supplied coolants simply because they all have different colors.

Calm down, you're over reacting. Since the 5-30 guys feel there is no difference between a 30 wt. oil and a 20 wt. oil as per MPG, but often claim better protection with the 30 wt. It's the same group who claim this, invoke the CAFE word. Just sayin.

When I started the conversation I really wanted to see just how many people had used 5-30 in place of 5-20. I know it's shocking to some that you would even ask that question but honestly many people do wonder if it's ok to do. I'm not concerned if one gets a slight bit better gas mileage or if one protects a slight bit better or not just wondered if you did run it for a long period of time if it would hurt anything. All of you guys have collectively a lot of experience and it's nice to be able to tap into that

I switched from 5W20 to 5W30 after the warranty expired on my 2001 4 cyl Accord. It now has 280K miles on it and uses a little oil between changes. I ran 5W20 most of the time from about 200K to 260K, but it used a lot of some of them including Subaru 0W20. I've run Mobil 1 5W30 or a mix of it with TGMO for the last few changes, and consumption is down and performance and engine sound are good. I think my summer fill will be Mobil 1 or Pentosin 5W30. At the high mileage of this engine, it seems to need a viscosity bump.
My engine could be different than many other posters in that it was specced for 5W30 the previous year and was seeming unchanged design wise when 5W20 was specced for my car. Later Honda engines could have some engine design features intended specifically for 5W or 0W20. Not that anybody has ever pointed any out.

I must have never got the memo, since Nissan/Infiniti still calls for a 5w30 in 3.7 L engines, and I ignored them, too, and went up a grade.
