The CAFE document was posted on BITOG some time back by a poster.
Please repost where CAFE requires 20 wt oils in engines calling for 20 wt. Warranties might, but CAFE. Just askin.
Right. CAFE regs require manufacturers to achieve a fuel economy standard across their range of models. How manufacturers achieve this standard is up to them. Lighter weight, better aerodynamics, different transmissions (CVT, DCT, etc), direct fuel injection, turbocharging and lower-viscosity oils are some of the techniques automakers use, but none of these techniques is mandated.
CAFE standards have been around for decades but German marques still specify 30 or 40 weight oils and GM just recently began transitioning from 5w30.

Been running Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 in my 2006 MDX because of a small rear main seal leak. No problems at all with this oil weight (and the leak stopped). Leak started around 180 000 kilometres, when I ran Toyota 0w20. It now has 320 000 km - so over 100 000 km on 5w30.

FWIW, In my prev DD, the V6 Honda of MY2006 (see sig) in all of it's tight clearances glory ran well in a severe environment with measly thin as butta 5w-20, I do recall doing one OCI of Maxlife I used primarily cause I heard so much about it right here and wanted to "glaze the seals" despite having low miles(~70k) for use with a High Mileage oil 75k). Fast forward to now where I drive an old school tec (no VVT, no DI) lexus that specs request a 5w30 (planning on 10 something in summer) I did it just to use a good oil really but if you really need the HIGH MILEAGE attriubutes namely the seal conditioners to "blood clot" the seals, I would say 5w30 would work well with better cst @ 100 and HTHS if those things are important to you. IT's good oil or alllll as we say here in texas.
