Recently the local Honda dealership switch from Castrol to Honda oil. When it is time to top off the oil, I rather swing buy Walmart or an automotive parts store to pick up a quart of oil. Who makes this stuff, and what is a suitable replacement for a quart of oil? I drive a 2002 Cr-v 0w-20 Thanks!!

You could mix anything with it for top off.

But if you want to get something that is close to HGMO, look for Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-20 at Walmart. Moorcroft and Honda Genuine are made by ConocoPhillips. Buy a 5qt jug and keep it solely for top offs.

I remember when the original Honda genuine motor oil sold in the US was clearly labelled as made for Honda by Mobil. They were also some of the first to sell a passenger car 0W-20, which was probably relabeled Mobil 1. Some were thinking of using that instead of the 5W-20 that was coming out at the time.

No reason not to use it. However, back then they were specifying 0W-20 for their hybrids (basically just the Insight in 2002).

Honda has back spec'd 20wts (originally 5W-20, now 0W-20) for the 2002 and up CRV. I mean its a K24, 20wt-40wt really isn't going to hurt it. Mobil at one time may have made Honda Genuine Motor Oil (HGMO), but now is ConocoPhillips.

Last I heard, Honda oil was made by Conoco Phillips .
So any Kendall, Conoco , Motorcraft, Phillips 66, Trop Artic etc would be the same.

Thanks for the chart!

How does kendall gt1 max compare to PP in a 0w20? We have a '17 accord ex 2.4 4cyl that will be needing an oil change soon. Is Honda branded oil Kendall oil or something different?

The PP is great, but just about any 0W-20 is wonderful simply because there has to be a decent percentage of "synthetic base stock oil" (to which the anti-foam, friction modifiers additive packs are added and blended) to achieve 0W-20. With other grades, there is more flexibility.
