So I just called Honda to find out what their 5w20 oil cost. $4.50 a quart! I find that to be crazy considering Mobil Clean 5000 and Exxon Superflo are supposedly similar if not exactly the same oil, and can be bought for around $2.50 a quart. Sorry, not a question asking for help this time, just something I thought I'd tell if anyone is interested in the Honda Oil.

Yeah, it's overpriced and for people that think they /have/ to use that stuff, along with their overpriced blue Frams that they sell because it's Honda certified! Personally, I'd never buy either of them unless they were cheaper than the competition.

To be fair, the A02 filters have things like a silicon ADBV and the unconventional thinner o-ring instead of the normal thick gasket. They may be made by Honeywell but they're not exactly re-badged orange cans with the cardboard top.

Honda A02s are cardboard topped. A01s had the small partial metal cap. But they both do have a silicon ADBV.

I was actually referring to the can, not the innards of the filter. But, I didn't know they were cardboard capped inside. Thanks for the info. Just a little more reason to stick with Napa Gold instead.

That's what I thought too. Warranty work and recalls suck, though :)

A01 are superior to the A02, and I have 4 of them in my basement still. I know someone who can still get me the A01's for $4/each so that's what I care to use when I use OEM. I agree that the silicon ADBV is a nice addition, but it's still not worth the coin IMO.

I agree the A01 is a better filter, but in thousands and thousands of uses, I've never seen any problems whatsoever with the A02 filters. I use em' on the GF's Civic, and I still sleep well at night.

My Legend uses the older, larger xxxxx-xxx-305 filters. Up until a couple months ago, they were made in Japan by Toyo Roki. Now made by Filtech in the USA. Still a heavy, solid feeling filter. I'm a fan of Filtech.

As for Honda oil, no reason to waste money on it. I'm pretty sure most dealers are required to carry it, but I'm not sure that I've ever used it. It's on the shelves, but we always use bulk oil.

Save your money. Go to K-Mart and get some Exxon Superflo.

its a shame that honda will tell the customer without using a honda oil filter the vtec will not function properly because of a noticeable oil pressure drop, thats not nice to do some people may be scared from that. anyway i never heard of such thing actually being true.

I agree. A01 has a better looking construction than A02.
I've only cut open two A02's - after about 5000 miles/3.5 months. The cardboard endcaps each time seemed as if they were in very good shape still - very sturdy and firm. I'm not sure when they would break down - but I figure they would collapse earlier than metal endcaps would.

Nevertheless, I am always in the search for quality/price ratio in oil and filters.

Filtech belongs to Toyo Roki.

saw a Honda 0w-20 oil at dealership and no mention of synthetic on the bottle, is it possible to make a 0w without using some group III at least? the label says the oil is made in Japan.
thx

I've read a lot of stuff on here saying all 0w-20 is synthetic, BUT I called Toyota about two weeks ago asking about their 0w-20. The man said "It is about 6.50 a quart, but in my opinion I wouldn't buy it because it's not even a synthetic its a blend, and if you need service we have it in the bulk barrels cheaper." I don't have a Toyota, but wanted to see if their 0w-20 was any cheaper, turns out its more expensive then most and APPARENTLY is just a blend.

Yeah, I agree about the A02's not failing, I don't particularly think they're bad, just horribly overpriced. I know the previous owner of my car always had it dealer serviced and for the past 7 years or so it used the A02 filter and it's still going fine. At the Acura dealership here, I want to say they're over $5 a piece, I'd much rather go pick up a PureONE for that price. Filtech makes excellent filters, I used one last summer for 4,356 miles and the insolubles were low and I had a great UOA with it.
