Honda Filters or FRAM Ultra

I just got a 2015 civic 1.8L L4 with 11K miles.

I want to change the oil and filter. Just checked and saw a Honda filter on it, not sure if its the one from factory considering my OLM is telling me to change oil and oil filter (its at 50% right now).

I was looking at the filter that would take it ...15400-PLM.... as well as the A01 and A02 debate. That being that the A01 is considerably better.

Also looking at the Fram Ultra which I have been planning to use in other vehicles.

A01 Honda from H and A parts, buy in 6 packs (they may have larger packs) and call it good.

While under warranty, I'd stick with Honda filters. Yes, the chances of a filter-related issue are very small. Yes, Honda technically can't deny a warranty claim if you use an aftermarket filter that meets vehicle specs... BUT, they can sure hassle you about it if they want.

After warranty, the Ultra is a great choice for extended drain intervals.

Us the Ultra now, it's the better filter from what specs we do actually know.

If it is the original factory Honda installed oil filter on your vehicle, have fun taking it off. The original oil filter installed at the factory is put on by a Gorilla.

Yup don't even try with your bare hands. Lucas make sure you got an oil filter wrench (not expensive and you'll use it over and over again). Preferably one like the self-adjusting/tightening one that fits multiple sizes and puts progressively more clamping power as you turn:

I own a Civic as well and I prefer to use the OEM filters. I got burned by Purolator a few years back and decided it wasn't worth it to bother with anything other than OEM. The OEM ones are decent filters (even the A02) despite what people say about flow over filtration, my used oil analysis always come out good.

The original oil filter came right off my '15 Accord without much effort at all.

Personally I prefer the Ultra.
It's easy to pick up when we're shopping for other stuff.
Flip a coin .
You can't go wrong with either one.

"Flow over filtration" would only be a real consideration when the engine is near redline in order to cause the PD oil pump to hit pressure relief. And a full synthetic filter with high efficiency will most likely flow better than an inefficient cellulose filter.

How were you burned with Purolator? What happened, if you don't mind me asking.

I have a stock of the older Purolator Synthetic oil filters I am using on our vehicles. My brother is using the Boss on his car. They seem to be working so far, but, the QC issues Purolator was having is making me leery of using them now.

I am also not thrilled with the Purolator air filter my brother is using on his car. The older Purolator before this one had a black rubber gasket/base, this one is orange and a little bigger than the black one, almost couldn't get the cover on because it is bigger. What I don't like is that the pleats in the middle are bending and deformed from the air flow. The old one didn't do this. Purolator using softer paper?

I got one of those lisle oil filter tools after trying to servicing my brothers civic 2010.....i ended up sticking a screw driver in the can to get it off.

Gonna put synpower or edge once I get my hands on some.

I use the Ultra. I bought my last one when Fram had their rebate and it ended up about what Honda wanted for their filter. Did not have a problem getting the factory filter off.

Personally I use the A01's and my used oil analysis are always excellent.

It could be a factory filter as Honda says to change every other OCI, so if the PO followed that they would have just dumped the oil and refilled. I'd change at your next OCI to be safe as you don't know for sure.

If I wasn't getting good results with the A01's and getting them for $6 a piece I'd be using a FU for 2x OCI's.

I use the Honda for no hassles during the warranty even though I know you don't have to. Have you gone over a year for the change oil light to come on at 50 percent?

I just got the car a couple months ago. I haven't put more than 2K miles. I don't know anything before that.

I order all my Honda filters, air/oil/cabin from RockAuto. I use the WIX Ultra for oil, and WIX on the air and cabin. I buy three of each at a time and save a bundle.
