I acquired a Honda EM400, maintenance and hours unknown.

I put fresh gas and oil in it. Third pull and it purred like a dozen kittens, ran five hours, changed out oil w/ PYB api:am 10w-30, took twelve ounces. 25 hrs into oci and not a drop low.
Honda says 150hr oci's, what do you guys think of that? Also they recommend 10w30/40 for general operation, 30wt above 60degree, 20wt or 20w-xx above freezing, 10w all temps.
I was thinking syn oil after this fill, any suggestions.

It's 55.4cc 3.38c.i.d. rated at 0.75hp at 3,840rpm, 1.2hp at 4000rpm.

Thanks,
Ken

I have the 500W version of that generator. I use M1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck or M1 15W-50, both with excellent results. I was getting quite a bit of sludge in the engine on conventional oils, hence the switch.

But, remember, I'm in South Florida, where it's hot and humid most of the year. And, I've had very bad results with conventional oils here.

CPE Inverter.
I think mine calls for 50 hour OCIs, and 10w-30 (I think).
I'm using Rotella 5w-40 synthetic.

I write the hours usage on the housing with a grease pencil (china marker) and track hours on the oil.

I generally use 50 hour oil change intervals in generators.

I'd never consider using a super thin oil in a flat head, air cooled generator. That really is the wrong product for the job.
