Hello gentlemen, I have a 03 honda element that has 208K on it and it has started to use about a quart of oil every 3 or 4 thousand miles. Before i changed my oil every 5k on the dot and it was always full at oil change time. I got it with 120k on it and i have used 5w20 synthetic oil since i have owned it, either Pennzoil platinum, valvoline synpower or Mobil 1 Extended Performance, depending on which was on sale.

My question is could i use a slightly thicker oil or might it just be something causing it to use oil like a pcv valve or something? Would a slightly thicker oil hurt anything cause my truck calls for 30 wt oil and i have tons of that on hand.

I would check and/or replace the PCV valve, I'd use an OE part and not something from a parts store. See how that goes, you can always move up to a 0W30 or 5W30 oil as well.

Thank you. It did sit for about 2 months while i was saving to have the starter replaced. Would that have anything to do with it. Stuck ring or something? I did add a little Marvels to the oil as it was about a half quart low so i added about 1/4 M1 and 1/4 MMO. Anything else that could cause this sudden oil consumption?

208000 miles of use....I would try a High Mileage oil

When my 99 Accord F23 started to consume a quart after 3000 miles I topped off with some Mobil 5000 and it soon gobbled that up quickly. Topped off with some MaxLife and changed the pcv valve with an oem unit and no more measurable consumption till I sold it about 70k miles later. I was doing a fair amount of hwy driving during this period.

I have an 03 CRV with the same series K24 engine. In 2003 it was almost impossible to buy 5w20 synthetic off the shelf so I used 5w30 synthetic instead. Now with 192,000 miles I am still using 5w30 synthetic (whatever name brand is on sale) and do not burn any oil.

No leaks, no smoke. But the exhaust does smell a bit odd, kinda like an egg [censored] or sulfur.

I will change the pcv and try High Mileage oil.

Thank you all.

Really, the word used to decribe passing gas is censored... wow

That smell might be the oil making the cat stink. my old 89 5.0 mustang just stunk like rotten eggs when you drove it hard. I always thought it was from oil burning at high rpm and load.
