Now I've seen it all... heres the text from an email I received about my honda dealer service hours and Nitrogen for the tires. Does it work?

"Announcing Extended Service & Parts Hours
and NITROGEN for Your Tires at all

As Of January 3rd 2009 the Service & Parts Departments will extend hours Saturday from 7:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.
From a simple oil change to major service on any vehicle we have you covered until 3:00 P.M. and no appointment is necessary. And for you
Do-It-Yourselfers our Parts Departments are also open until 3:00 P.M.

Now Offers
NITROGEN for Your Tires!

Nitrogen in tires is becoming a popular replacement for standard air. Nitrogen is all around us... The air we breathe is 78% Nitrogen. Nitrogen has many advantages over oxygen when it comes to tire inflation. With nitrogen tire inflation, improvements can be noted in a vehicle's handling, fuel efficiency and tire life through better tire pressure retention, improved fuel economy and cooler running tire temperatures. You'll immediately notice an improvement in road feel as smaller imperfections in pavement and asphalt seem to dissappear!

We service all makes and models and this
new service can be performed on ANY vehicle.

Benefits:
Better Handling
Improved Fuel Economy
Longer Tire Life
Maintain proper inflation pressure longer:

Tires inflated with air lose 2 psi/month.
It takes up to 6 months or more for the
same loss with nitrogen filled tires.

Nitrogen filled tires last longer, provide increased safety, offer better fuel efficiency, and reduced operating costs.

Maintain proper inflation pressure longer:
Tires inflated with compressed air lose 2 psi/month. It takes 6 months or more for the same loss with nitrogen filled tires.
Improve fuel efficiency:
Properly inflated tires provide a 3.3% increase in miles/gallon
Longer tire life:
Maintaining proper inflation pressure minimizes tire aging, tire life improves by up to 25%
Eliminate chemical aging of the tire:
As oxygen and water vapor permeate through the side wall, the rubber degrades, causing the tire to deteriorate. Nitrogen is inert, halts the chemical aging of the tire, and prolongs tire quality
Nitrogen is very dry (-50°F dewpoint):
Nitrogen eliminates condensation and rim corrosion, and will allow tires to run cooler and provide a safer ride
Maximize safety:
Cooler rolling temperatures minimize auto-ignition and catastrophic blowouts, providing a safer ride.
Increase retread-ability:
As nitrogen minimizes the oxidation of the rubber, the tire retains its original quality longer
No Appointment Necessary - In & Out in 20 Minutes!

LOL.

My dealership was slamming Nitrogen, saying it was useless - so that I would buy new tires from them as opposed to the tire stores.

I don't know about you guys, but I fill my tires with Helium gas.

My car floats 4" above the pavement and I just float around everywhere. I strapped a boxfan to the trunk that is powered by a rechargeable 16.2V Lithium Ion battery pack that lasts for 46 days before a recharge.

I literally get INFINITY MPG.

0-60 in 0.2 seconds

If I stick some weights in the trunk, I can obtain a vertical speed of +1800 ft/s. I regularly beat Cessnas in altitude climbing competitions.

Who writes this stuff? They should promote the benefits of nitrogen, as inconsequential as they are, by misleading the consumer, instead of flat out lying.

If the oxygen leaks out more quickly, then after a while what's left? - mainly the nitrogen I guess, so that solves that problem, and for free too, at least if the theory is correct, which I doubt. i think gases expand and contract at the same rate, both oxygen and nitrogen, so that theory is also bunkus.

+1

Either oxygen leaks out faster, in which case it's a self correcting problem or it doesn't leak out faster and it's an outright scam.

We'll it wont be a huge benefit, and definetely wont help handling under normal circumstances.

Nitrogen was mainly used for racing because it kept the tire pressures more consistent with the heat generated by track time. The same can be said for a long highway run in a family car. Its also supposed to be of benefit in the winter. How much it helps, I guess depends.

FYI. I read today the new Nissan GTR comes from the factory with nitrogen filled tires. It must be worth something.

I much prefer chlorine gas as I like the inside of my tires germ-free. Additionally, it is easy to tell if you have a leak...

Since air is 78% nitrogen the real advantage is that it contains no moisture. So, only fill your tires from an air source that has a moisture/water filter. IMO and Nitrogen fill is a waist of money and a gimmick as a tank of Nitrogen is very cheap. So cheap, it should be offered free to regular customers.

FWIW my old tempo had a slow leak in the tires and I would have to put about 5-10 PSI in them over a 2 weeks period. Then I took the car to Costco for an oil change ('cos I was lazy), and they had a sign that said "Try the difference" or something with it, so I had them drain my tires and put it in for $10. The tires still leaked, a slightly lower rate it seemed, but it didn't do [censored].

So when the car starts rotting horribly from the wheel arches outward, you probably have a leak. Or, the mechanic passes out when balancing the wheel.

LOL

Your Honda dealer will be sending out an email next week on the benefits of pixie dust sprinkled at key locations in your eninge. I'm privy to this information so I have my sources. Dont miss out on this one! Sign-up now!

LOL

So, when they put in the snake oil, I mean nitrogen, how do they purge the nasty 22% of non-nitrogen air that is in there? Fill and empty, fill and empty, etc.?

How much do they charge for this non-value added service?

I have a local dealer that puts nitrogen in all tires out on the lot, then they add $49 for the privilege.

That's like the "pre-installed" paint and fabric protectant that they charge $749 for, or spraying undercoating in the wheel wells and adding $99 for it.

Sorry, unless I asked for it, I'm not buying it... even if it the "service" has already been done to the car.

If it ends up being a deal breaker, then so be it.

That's just classic.

I think we have something messed up as I understand PV=nRT the same way as you but obviously race engineers would use C02 instead of Nitrogen if it held more consistent pressures...
Physics 101 seems like a long time ago!
