Given that Mazda 3 calls for Fram XG6607 and it’s interchangeable with the XG7317 Ultras. Can Honda OEM filters 15400-plm-a02 be used in-place of the XG667/XG7317?

I’ve gotten a good deal on the Hondas oil filters and was wondering if it would work?

TIA

Yes, you can use a HONDA oil filter if the app is the same for both engines.
If you can get the HONDA filters on the cheap, sure why not!
However, just know that the HONDA dealer oil filters are not the same as the filters that are put on the engine from the factory.
The dealer oil filters ending in 02 are FRAM Tough Guard(silver can) and the OE Honda oil filters ending in 01 are from FIL-TEC.

Most likely the good deal on HONDA oil filters that you're talking about(ending in 02) are the FRAM Tough Guard(painted HONDA Blue w/Honda markings).

I mean, the HONDA dealer filters are OK but there are better filters available even in the FRAM lineup.

I thought the Honda filters were made with better media. I think it might be cheaper to straight up buy fram touch guard

Bypass seems to be the same (12-14 PSID) so should work. Thats for the non-turbo's. Mazda Turbos have a different OEM part number, but all the aftermarket filters don't seem to recognize that.

Physical size of these is a touch longer compared to the 6607, so equivalent to the 7317 I believe. Should work fine. ONly thing I would ask is if your Mazda still under warranty? If it is, and something happened, it may be a fight with Mazda if they find that filter spun on. In reality, shouldn't be an issue, just something to think about.

You have to judge the dollar value for yourself.
When the dealer Honda *****02 filter and the FRAM TG we’re both cut open from multiple organizations/YouTubers/oil filter testing websites, they’re the same filter. I’ve even done it myself with my personal Hondas and I can confirm this from my own eyes.

This isn’t to say that, if you can get them at a good price that you shouldn’t use the. Indeed do so!
However if you can get a better filter at a better value then use those instead.

The A02 is the Honda OEM equivalent of the aftermarket 7317/(14610) application. If the 7317 fits then the A02 will too. That said, and if it matters to you, best information has shown the A02 is significantly less efficient the PH/TG/XG 7317. So imo depends on how good a deal a "good deal" is. That said, I suspect the A02 similar efficiency to the Mazda OEM.

Thanks!

My Mazda is way past warranty, 11 y/o now
Yeah the dollar difference is $3 cheaper per filter compared to the XG6607 and $5 cheaper than the TG7317.

Seems like TG are actually more expensive coming at $14 while the Honda $9

What better filter is there for the same price?

This is tangentially related, kinda sorta not really, but I'm gonna type it anyway...

So, the parts store I work at started selling OEM filters for Honda, Nissan, Toyota, HyunKia, a few years ago. In addition to the ACDelco, Motorcraft, and Mopar filters we already had.

They are SUPER popular. Many customers ask for them. And honestly, it makes my life easier too. If they ask for an oil filter and don't give a brand preference up front, and aren't looking for an oil+filter promo package, I have a few options... I can list the dozen of filters and their prices... or I can say, "we have the OEM Honda (or whatever brand) filter in stock for $14 (or whatever the price is), then we have cheaper options or more expensive options. Did you want me to go over those with you?" 75% of the time they'll just say "give me OEM", 15% of the time they'll just say "give me the cheapest one" and the other 10% they actually want to hear all the options. A huge timesaver overall and while maybe they aren't the BEST quality filters or BEST value filters... they're good enough, and nobody ever got in trouble for using or recommending the OEM filter. While I'm happy to discuss filters if anyone wants to, most people don't know anything about them, and offering OEM makes for a quick and easy transaction.

Check at the CarQuest auto parts store. Edit - see you mentioned it earlier, and at $11 CA not a bad price.
Is it that much better than the TG7317? I think I have to a 30 min trip to the store hence the hesitation lol

Also, is it the regular version or is there a premium tier?

Walmart has the FRAM Ultra Synthetic 7317 for around $9/ea and their own SuperTech filters for around $5/ea.
And they’re quite good filters for the price and identical to most AC filters.
Many auto parts stores have FRAM filters at much higher prices
