As for a carry gun, I would advise against the Taurus. It is a good starter gun, but I would never carry it.
If you want a carry gun that will fire when you need it get a Glock. I will only carry Glock.
9mm is easy to shoot and its light.
However I would have to recommend something with more punch. I am getting the glock 27. A 40 cal.
I would use nothing smaller than a 40cal. a 45 round would work best.
If you have to shoot someone, you want a round that will put them down for the count!
Good luck with your CCP.

Please take some classes on guns and gun safty if you have not allready.
I doubt a first time gun owner is going to buy a semi auto rather than a revolver.
First time he pulls the trigger and nothing happens or he thinks the gun is empty and it goes off, there is gonna be some problems.
There is nothing wrong with a taurus revolver, smith and wesson, ruger,or the many other manufactures of revolvers.
+1. I own a few very nice and reliable semi-auto pistols, but the gun on my nightstand is a Ruger SP101 3" .357. It'll go boom when I pull the trigger and will not stove pipe, limp wrist, no safeties, etc. in the heat of the moment. I highly recommend a revolver like this to newbies. I am not putting down the SW M&P or Sig P229 semi-autos that I own at all. I just feel more comfortable in an adrenaline filled situation with a revolver, but YMMV.
That being said, a .357 round can really bite you in a smaller revolver, so I went with .38special +P lead semi wadcutter hollow points (LSWCHP) 158 grains. Not a lot of kick and that round is considered at/near the top of effectiveness in .38.
All of the above is if you cannot get to your 12 gauge pump for whatever reason. There is nothing to that will intimidate the bad guys or stop them faster than a person proficient with a shotgun.
