Home GFCI Outlets Not Working

Just a guess, but if the hot were wired to the common side of the GFCI and the common were wired to the hot side of the GFCI and the GFCI did have a proper ground wire wired to it then it may not work.
 
Get one of these:

Touch the black wire with it and it should buzz. If it does there is voltage to the outlet. Just buy another GFI outlet, kill breaker and attached Black wire to brass screw and White wire to the silver screw and bare copper to the green screw. Make sure it on the Line screws and not the load screws.
