I have 1997 same engine 1.6L 3-speed auto tran. I regularly got 34mpg for 70%highway drive. All tires pressure are set to 35; the ride is not that bad.

Wish I have the over-drive so I don't have to rev that high when go over 75mph. No idea how much rps since it does not have tachometer.
 
It burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles? It only has 135,000 miles on it. Just goes to show that Toyota does not know how to build engines. What a piece of junk.

Oh, Wait, Did you say Toyota? Oh, nevermind. Great Car! Great Engine!

in the '99 PRIZM ( Corolla ) we own , calls for 30 lbs. of pressue front and rear , so usually keep close to 32 lbs. per tire ( contacted several tire companies and said no more than 2 lbs. of pressure of vehicle calls for , otherwise gets risky ) . Too less air can cause more drag ( higher rolling resistance , more fuel consumption ) and poorer handling ( especially in emergencies , leading to accident ) . Over inflating can cause more heat buildup , possibly leading to a blowout . Check door jam or glove compartment for proper tire pressue .

I was being sarcastic. I have a '95 Mitsu V6 with 175k miles that burns a quart of 5W20 every 2k miles, and people respond by saying "typical POS Mitsu engine." You have a Toyota that burns a quart of 5W30 every 1k miles and the silence is deafening. Just trying to stir things up a bit.

The consumption seems to be normal for these cars; everyone here that has one says they burn about a quart/1000 miles. When I get a bit of 20w-50 in there from top offs, the consumption drops to about 1 quart/1500 to 2000 miles.

I certainly wouldn't call that kind of consumption normal. I have a '94 Geo Prizm (Corolla) with the 4A-FE engine, and currently have just under 209K on the clock. I'm using a quart every 2500 to 3000 miles, not every 1K.

Regarding fuel economy, I have about 103K miles worth of data, from 106K to 209K.

My best reading was 41.5 almost three years ago to date. This was on a trip to Denver, CO. My worst recorded was about 26.5. It was 11 days later and must have been a tank of all around town.

My running average over the past 103K miles has been 31.7 My typical driving habits had me driving 80MPH on the freeway, and some pretty brisk acceleration.

The past two tanks, I've tried to keep things a bit more in check, seldom faster than 65, more moderate acceleration. Not much else has changed, and I'm even running the A/C a good deal of the time and have knocked out two tanks of 34.7 and 34.6 MPG. That's about a 9-10% improvement with nothing more than having a lighter foot.

Your car takes a serpentine belt, I don't see a separate AC belt listed for it?? Were you able to use a shorter belt?

I wonder if someone could accomplish the same thing by using a switch in the field coil circuit. Without the field coil energized, the alternator shouldn't take as much power from the engine. One could even use a relay and a switch so that you could have the field coil only energized when the brake pedal is pushed (wire it to the brake light circuit). That would provide regenerative braking....

...Oh, and I wouldn't suggest doing this with a normal car battery. You'd want to use a deep-cycle marine battery. Normal car batteries are not designed for cyclic use like this, and will not last as long. Additionally deep-cycle marine batteries seem to have a greater amp-hour rating than similarly sized car batteries, although this is hard to be sure of since many car batteries have no amp-hour rating.
 
I think he must have the 7AFE, which had major oil consumption problems. The 4AFE, I believe, was not plagued with this problem.
On a side note, I just took a trip down to Wilmington, NC in my 91 Corolla with the 4AFE, on I-40, which is flat as a pancake at points. Anyway, my dad was doing about 80 more or less because we were late. The car already had about 50 miles of city driving. It still got over 38 MPG. The A/C belt is in place. On the way back, we used the A/C, so mileage did dip some. It's a manual also. Still, 39 MPG on the larger 7AFE on mostly 20W-50 is excellent.

My Chilton Corolla book includes the 94 Corolla and it doesn't mention anything about a Serpentine belt. I'm very positive that all 88-97 Corollas used the primitive old V-Belt system.
 
Yes, you're right, for some reason the description says serpentine belt but it's actually a v-belt.

Kind of amazing a 1994 model year car would be using v-belts.

It's kind of a hybrid. The belts are ribbed serpentine like belts, but there is no automatic tensioner.

There are multiple belts, like a V-belt car, but the belts are like serpentine belts.

Yes, the field coil way is being done by at least one hypermiler. And you could control it with an accelerometer, the brake light, manual switch. It trades some wear on the battery for some saved gas.
 
Yea, it's the 7AFE. I went fishing again yesterday (mini vacation) and got 41.4 mpg! I even clikced the gas pump a couple times more to really get the tank full. And I was hammering it to get passed motorhomes and keep up with the lifted Superduties.
 
By the way, the 20w-50 has really cut the consumption. Normally on a 200 mile trip like this of all highway driving, it will be down maybe a 1/4 inch on the stick. This time it didn't use any.

My 2003 !echo! has v-belts. @ 125K, I've had them changed twice, once @ 90K and once when it threw one off. Sitting in my driveway trying to muscle thrown belt back on the pulley (the inside pulley of course) I longed for my 1992 Lesabre with a 15 second serp belt change....
