Hello

I am new to the board and this is my first post. Let me say at the very beginning that I am not a chemist or an engineer. I am currently running a K&N oiled air filter. After looking at oil analysis with K&N filters, I am concerned that this may not be a good filter for my 2001 ls1-ss.
Is there any oil analysis results on a vehicle running the oiled Holley Powerslot. Is this better at filtration than the K&N. Any other recommendations on oiled filters or info will be appreciated.

The Holley is a foam filter so it should be better at stopping the dirt than the K&N. I haven't seen any results yet on it though.
 
After I reviewed the oil analysis and pretty well determined that the majority of K&N had high silicon levels, I fiqured it would just be a repeat of the same conclusion.
 
Everything I have seen indicates that the results vary according to the application with many people having excellent results.

For my Olds Ciera, there was no difference in analysis between AC and K&N and the specific issue of MAF contamination was solved using the K&N.

I'm running analysis to compare oils in my SS, but I'll also see if the silicon readings are high with the K&N.
 
Hey Patman, are you sure the Holley is foam? I just replaced my K$N with a Holley in my Firebird and it is a oiled fabric like the K&N. Only difference is the oil is blue. I think they will be the same as far as filtering ability. The Holley has a thicker gasket and might flow a bit more than the K&N as it has a smidge more filter area, at least on mine. The K&N has about a 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch all the way around the filter panel in which the gasket rubber "wicked" into the fabric. The Holley doesn't have this. Also, with the K&N I had to not only apply the little crappy gasket they supplied but I had to also go out and get some extra gasket material{ foam with a sticky back} from HomeDepot so it would seal. I really don't think the Holley or the K&N will make much more HP in a mostly stock LS1 as the stock panel is fairly big. I can switch back and forth between the stock paper and the K&N and see no real difference in mph at the track. I contrast, I can remove the filter
and consistantly see 1/2 to 1 mph. JMO,

Judd, I had not seen a Holley filter, and I had thought that the guys on Ls1.com said it was a
foam filter but I guess I was mistaken. It'll be interesting to see if the Holley has lower silicon
levels on the analysis.

I always ran a Fram air filter on my LS1 Formula, as many guys on LS1.com back in the early
days found that it worked the same or slightly better than a K&N, both on the dyno and
at the track.

I've been running a Holley filter on my Camaro and previous firebird for quite some time. It is blue, I was one of the first customers to buy this filter.

I think its a lot better than the K&N, and I believe it filters out the particles very well when its kept oiled up.

It seals far better than the stock filter and just seems to work better than the K&N. Due to the wider pleats large dirt particles seem to collect and fall off the filter in clumps of oil, keeping the filter clean. The car runs really well with it and hopefully won't show much silicon in the oil analysis.

If you want a highflow filter its the better choice, and its $5 cheaper. I recommend the donaldson blackwing reoiling kit for it, SLP sells those for $10.
 
I've noticed that the ads for the Holley say that it filters "better" than the other leading brands of performance air filters. I guess they mean K&N.... It'll be interesting to find out if their statements are true.

They are bout the same price. Sometimes the Holley is cheaper by a buck or two. Sometime the K&N is cheaper. Most of the time the K&N is cheaper by a few bucks. On the whole, I think the Holley is better filter for the most part.
 
i wish on that site they had reasons why their product is good like figures, graphs, and efficiency..cant really judge by pictures.
 
Yea, their site is a bit crude. I have heard and read in magazines that they use **** near twice the amount of cotton gauze as K and N. I ordered one and was shocked at how well constructed it was and how much more material there was compared to K and N. Most K and Ns, you can see day light through the little holes in the material. Not the S and B!
