HOA says no US flag

How do these HOA's form? In my opinion the "land developer" is worse than the worst used car salesman. They take productive bean field and give everyone a stupid lot in the compound.

The time honored and most effective way of fighting horsepoop is with bigger and badder horsepoop.

If you don't feel up to that, then there is always expressio unius est exclusio alterius. Find something that is not prohibited, and just do that. No one can possibly think up a rule against everything.

Maybe you can get one of those projector things to illuminate your house in Old Glory at night.

We all give up freedom of choice. From birth thru death we are controlled. It is called living in societies.....

Good point.

Is there a rule prohibiting paint colors on your home OP?

If not, perhaps if you painted your front door or garage door as a US flag, the HOA might be willing to negotiate..

On a Jeep board, an HOA told a guy he couldn't keep his work truck in his driveway (just a 3/4 ton pickup).

He read the rules, and went and bought a late 70's caddy in horrible shape, spray painted it funky colors, and cut the mufflers off. Parked it in the driveway, and cruised the neighborhood every afternoon in it. None of those violated any HOA rules.

Didn't take long before they changed the rule to allow his pickup to be parked in the neighborhood.

Many people like orderly and clean places to live. HOA's help make that happen. Ever had neighbors that were slobs or let things go?

There's a way around that without HOAs...it's called earning enough income that you can afford to live in a nice enough neighborhood that you don't have to worry about that stuff...

I absolutely see the benefit to an HOA, our neighborhood is beautiful and clean. I just don't agree with the flag rule. I guess I should have asked for clarification of the word "flagpole" before I built the house. When I think of flagpoles I think of the inground freestanding type.

There are no pro’s whatsoever to hoa’s. Home ownership is about freedom. If I want to be told what to do with where I live,I’ll rent an apartment.

Has nothing to do with the price point. There are HOA's in New York and other major cities where the prices for a unit are in the millions. Those are really fun because the owners are millionaires so they're either suing the HOA or getting sued so in essence they're almost suing themselves as they have a part ownership in the HOA. But there's really no other way to build a building with a few hundred units without some kind of HOA where you have to abide by rules and regulations.

^^ this.
you can always think of something to use for leverage. a six ft. high painting of hitler, or o. bin laden on your garage door could be a good idea.

whenever this topic comes up, I can't understand why people would live in a hoa setting. the bad far outweighs the good, per way too many restrictive rules.read BEFORE you buy. caveat emptor.i guess, to each his own.

Exactly what I did when living in an HOA in Colorado.

No overnight parking allowed in driveways. I knew the rule, saw it when I bought the house.

But I had four cars and a three car garage. Further, one bay was taken up with woodworking tools. So two clean, presentable cars were parked in the driveway, night after night.

I got a notice from the HOA...they quoted the rules while offering no option other than “remove your car(s) from the driveway.”

The city (of Broomfield, CO) allowed overnight parking in the street. The street was city property over which the HOA had no control.

I parked two cars in the street. Night after night. Complicating snow removal and trash collection.

After a few months, I received a notice from the HOA, notifying me of the change in rules, from “no overnight parking in driveways” to “no storage of unserviceable vehicles in driveways” or something like that.

And I moved the cars back to my driveway.

The neighborhood remains an HOA (actually, PUD, but similar legal structure) and it remains a very nice neighborhood. I would live there again. It remains a nice neighborhood. The HOA was reasonable, and the houses climbed in value dramatically during my time there.

Sometimes, these organizations are run by petty tyrants, and sometimes by reasonable folks, but either way, you can change the rules if you’re willing to put forth the effort.

This sounds like something from "The Stepford Wives".

You need to get creative. Don’t use a pole. Attach the flag to a wooden 2x4, then it wouldn’t be a flagpole. It would be a flag post. Not against the rules!

The definition for “pole” is

pole
noun
1.
a long, slender, rounded piece of wood or metal, typically used with one end placed in the ground as a support for something.

So maybe find a plastic post or something.

I worry about my own residence, ideally the trees and distance are sufficient that I can’t see the neighbors and thus don’t care if they are not using white lights or have a dog or need new paint or are god forbid performing an oil change in public view .

You know all that important stuff that requires an hoa because seeing such things is beyond terrifying , even worse is if a neighbor has a yard sale more than once a year.

...neighbor had a sale all summer.
They got ahold of a village rule that allowed 3 times per summer.
so: granma and 4 daughters applied each week alternatively.
HOA could not do anything because of already approved by village...

But my garage door 3 inches crack or my back patio kiosk where evil....

I doubt the HOA language specifically says "American flag" ... the OP is just putting American flag in his posts. The HOA is talking about any flags.

I live in an HOA which has reasonable bylaws and low HOA dues, and I think the good definitely out weighs the bad. It keeps the houses and lots in this neighborhood from continually declining because people are too lazy to mow and weed their lawns, keep their house painted, park junked cars with flat tires on the streets, and kinds of other nonsense like that. If you live in a neighborhood where people can do whatever they want, chances are you're going to have some neighbor doing all kinds of crazy stuff that you're probably not going to like at some point.

Also, if you live inside a city limits, the city will also have all kinds of rules for residences to follow.
