HM in a Kubota tractor

I'm really not sure where to post this so my apologies if I should have placed it elsewhere.

I've got a Kubota BX2200 diesel tractor that has developed a rear main seal leak, not bad, just a few drops. This tractor has about 800 hours on it and I've always used either Delo or Rotella 15w40 with a Wix filter. Oil gets changed about every 100 hours which works out to be once a year.

What do you guys think abot using a HM in this tractor. Do you think it might dry up this leak.
 
I'm not sure if any High Mileage oils meet diesel specs.....I'd just keep it topped up, and not risk engine damage.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 meets the "CF" spec - dunno if that's current enough for your Kubota's specs or not.

Not trying to be the fly-in-the-ointment but I have three Kubotas and if one of them developed a leak I would fix it with a new seal. They are very simple to repair and very well worth keeping up.

Also, the odds of oil "repairing" a bad seal are remote, extremely remote. Oil can't put rubber back on a worn lip, repair a nick or fix a weak garter spring. Plus, speaking generally, there are other possible leaks from the bellhousing area besides the rear main.
 
Before I went and pulled the thing apart, I'd at least consider a run or two of ARX. It's by far less time and money intensive than separating a BX2200. If that does not work, then I'd pull it apart. Nothing wrong with taking the easy, inexpensive way out if it's viable. Then go right back to the excellent oil/filters you've been running.
 
This is going to sound more churlish than I intend, but...

I wonder what the true percentages of success are for the various stop leaks? Whether they work or not (and in my experience they don't), everybody says, "Oh, might as well try the cheap route first." That "forlorn hope" might be all that's keeping some of the "magic elixir" companies alive... all those desperate people. No doubt some will chime in with some story or other, but my guess is that the vast majority of product is a waste of money, either from it being a product that doesn't work or the problem being beyond what any product can "cure."

In 20 years as a tech and another 20 as a "retired" tech that's still elbow deep into things automotive, I can count the times I've see stop leaks work on the thumbs of one hand. The only time I saw a "magical" result was way back, when the trick was to pour a quart of brake fluid into the engine just before an oil change, run it a while and then dump the oil. Worked on a VW air cooled whose rear seal had gotten rock-hard from heat (a common problem back then, mostly due to the materials). Ended up having to replace it anyway later, though. Heck, as easy as a Beetle engine was to pull, it was the height of laziness to not to do the repair (I think my record was around 5 minutes to pull a type 1 engine... so call the dog in and see if he's wet).

Before you think I'm riding the high horse, I'm just as guilty of this "hope" stuff as anyone. I recently tried to solve some trans leaks on my Farmall tractor with stop leak... the real deal... an ester-based seal swell/conditioner compound.Ran it six months. It might have slowed a little but I had to still go in and replace the seals. Maybe they were softer but there is little effective difference between a hard worn-out seal and a soft worn-out seal. They both leak.
 
I've been around Kubotas since the late 70s and they are well made and easy to fix. Perhaps I would possibly try AutoRx but the rest of the snake-oils at the discount store can fix the bulge in your wallet and that's about it. Been an ASE Master Tech for 25 years and owned my own shop for 7 years. NEVER seen a leak more than a seep permanently fixed by a liquid in a bottle. Perhaps somebody has but not me.
 
I agree with Jim and Mokanic for the most part. No magic fluid will stop a leak if there is physical damage.

My experience with ARX is well documented in the additives section. It was a particular scenario where combustion byproducts and un-intended abuse combined to make for some really poor ring sealing. But the use of ARX liberated them, in stellar fasion. I have always been a skeptic of additives, but this is one case where I became a believer. ARX is not, however, a magic silver bullet that will cure all problems.

If the BX2200 seal leak is from a hardened or otherwise glazed seal, the ARX might help out there. But if the seal is truly damaged or was improperly installed, no chemical will fix it. My only point is that it's one heck of a lot cheaper and easier to try it first, versus pulling the engine and seperating the transmission off.

I'd like to know more about the chemistry of how seal swell agents work with a seal material. Is it a permanent fix or do they revert back after a while? Do the agents work with all types of seal materials, from rope to Buna, Viton, Nitrole, Polyacrylate, Silicone, etc?

I'm not sure how long they stay swelled for but I know they do not work on all seal materials, rope being one.
