Hi guys,

Our dad just bought a new Kubota 135GX tractor. He wants to take good care of it, he is planning on changing the fluids after break-in, but he isn't really brand loyal, just wants to use a quality oil.
The tractor has a DPF system, and the owner's manual says to use CJ-4, either 10w30 or 15w40.
The break-in is 50 hours. I was eyeing the Delo 10w30 XLE synblend or Delo 5W-40 at our local Walmart, O'rielly is carrying the Delo 15w30 Severe Duty.

I'm open to recommendations to other brands. What is a good oil to use?

Thanks,

That's it in a nutshell. Any lube meeting those requirement will suffice.

I'm not really familiar with what that model designation is? "135GX". Is this a tractor, excavator, etc? Going to be used year round, summer only, ??? The reason I ask is because I suspect a 10w30 would work for your dad year-round. I run Rotella 10w30 TP conventional in my Kubota and Duramax and have excellent used oil analysis. I am not stating you need to run that particular brand, but you certainly don't "need" a syn.

Much of it can turn based upon how many OCIs/year, etc. Certainly the two Delo products you stated will work quite well, but so will a host of other choices. Might as well pick one based upon convenience and cost; don't feel you have to be brand loyal.

You've been here long enough to know the drill; anything that meets the OEM criteria is going to suffice quite well.

It's not like Kubotas are know to be finicky about lubes; to the contrary, they seem to run on just about any decent HDEO and never wimper.

I used Rotella or Delo 15w40 and Wix filters in our DT1000 (32hp), OCI's were at 50 hrs. Never an issue over 10 years.
Worked great, year round and I had a lot of seat time in it, especially in hot summers

It is a tractor. It is actually a M135GX, sorry, forgot the "M" in the original post. It is a tractor with around 135 horsepower. It has a turbocharger, and particulate filter on the exhaust.
This is the first diesel engine our dad has owned that has a particulate filter. He has a 2006 M105X tractor with turbocharger, but, no DPF on the exhaust. The other, smaller, diesel tractors are even older than that, and have nothing like that on them.

That was one of the reasons I asked for oil recommendations for oil, not only to choose an oil to protect the engine, but also for the DPF as well.

This tractor is mainly going to be used in the spring and summer. We own 80 acres, and our dad is going to be plowing in the spring, as well as planting the crops. Then, in the summer it will be used to run the hay equipment. In the fall, it may be used to pull the grain wagon at harvesting, but spring and summer is when it will used and worked the most.

I thought that might be the tractor, but was not sure.

The addition of the DPF has no effect on the oil; it's a downstream exhaust process. However, the regens may have some effect; I have no idea if they do regend in or out of cylinder. I suggest sticking with the OEM OCIs for sure (as I know nothing about how much dilution you'll see), and using any CJ-4 you can get at a fair price. Don't be afraid of house brands (Rural King, TSC, SuperTech, etc) if the price is right.
