You can't expect someone straight out of school to do a task like that better than someone who didn't go to school. There are no schools that have oil change 101. It's something that is learned by experience. For the money it sounds like you are willing to pay, you are going to have to train anyone, whether they went to school or not. If you don't have the time to train him, you need to up the wages you are willing to pay to attract a guy from the local Jiffy Lube. Hiring someone with an education is not going to pay off until you let him do a big job, like engine work. He's going to be slow as [censored] but at least he'll have the sense to know what NOT to do (hopefully). Education only pays off in the long run, not for an apprentice. I don't think motivation is a generational thing, I know plenty of young people who are being successful in this business.

While his response may have been over the top, I thought it an apt one to the post it was in response to. It also captures, in its own way, a lot of the disenchantment that exists among Gen X'ers who were raised in baby boomer households, and had a set of values, beliefs, and expectations instilled in them that they found very much at odds with the world we found ourselves in when we finished post-secondary schooling and entered the workforce proper.

Anyway, this is going off topic and I don't wish it to.

More on topic: as others have pointed out, and as I too saw first hand during my time in management, hiring woes and work ethic crosses generational lines and can't be generalized to a particular generation. Each has its best and worst, and in between. There have already been several good responses written to the OP that hopefully help him in resolving his present hiring situation.
