My least valuable vehicle is a beat-to-[censored] 1996 GMC Sonoma. The 4.3 V6 has 170,000 miles and leaks oil from various areas -- enough that I can't park it on our clean carport. Here's my normal oil change for this ugly beast (GM AC filter not pictured). I only put about 5,000 miles per year on this pickup, and it gets one oil change each spring. The engine still runs smoothly, but I've been waiting on the Chevy transmission to konk out for years.

Yeah I would drop the lucas and just use a thicker oil. The lucas is diluting your additive pack while thickening the [censored] out of your oil. Plus that [censored]'s expensive compared to oil: about $10 a quart iirc.

Put the extra $9 (Lucas) towards Mobil 1 10w-30 High Mileage - a stouter 30 that could help with the leaks ...
Or just a Dino HM ...

Why start using Mobil 1 in a 21 year old vehicle that gets driven 5,000 miles a year? The recommendation for a 10w-40 or 10w-30 conventional HM oil is spot on.

Good advice, I had PZ HM, Full Syn PZ HM, Val Full Syn HM, and QS Full Syn all gave dollar bill size oil spots, 3 months Mobil1 HM penny size oil spots, 5k per year need truck to plow road and get to work.

Don't agree with this Mobil1 is on sale and rebate often at 1 OCI per you have plenty of time to plan and take advantage of this, the price difference will be cheaper than a pack of cigarettes!
TOTO.

I'd save the money and not buy the lucas or the cigarettes.

An hdeo like rotella or delo should do well here rather that the lucas. You could even use the syn rotella or delo if you wish.

I'm still stuck on the fact that it only has 170,000 miles on it and has those issues. Who ruined that thing so soon that you need Lucas?

Probably the fact someone has been using Lucas for God knows how long... OP use a HDEO or a 10w40HM oil and stop using Lucas snake oil.

I'm pretty certain this guy isn't looking for advice. If it works for him don't knock it. As to the cigs, as long as I'm not breathing that smoke I don't care if he chooses to.

This. I'd run 10W30 or 10W40 high mileage conventional oil if he wants a thicker oil. Ditch the oil additive, it does nothing but drain your bank account.
