Hilarious K&N TV ad

K&N is running a TV add, at least on cable.
It starts with a basic acknowledged truth, that a dirty air filter will cost you 10% in fuel economy. It then goes on to say the solution is K&N air filters, as they "never have to be replaced." I will let the obvious misdirection of this statement, ignoring the tedious "maintenance" cleaning, and oiling the media go. What I am pointing out that if you look at the comparison shot of the paper and the K&N, you can actually see the pinholes in the K&N media in the backlighting......

I have never been a fan of the oiled gauze after market air filters of any brand. I had an aFe brand K&N clone on a '95 Vette for a very short while... same thing you noticed-- you didn't even need to hold it up to light to notice pinhead sized holes in the media.

I have used OE paper type ever since.

Look at it under magnification, things are not always as they appear.

How long does it really take? How often do you have to do this?

When I used them I found the process was simple and they seemed to last longer than a regular filter did (cleaning vs replacing). I never had any trouble with MAS etc. getting fouled.

they are touting their superiority, but the side-by-side back-lit shot showed a uniform paper filter with no obvious holes, and the K&N had many obvious holes.

Meh.
I haven't paid for either of the two K&N's I've had. One was free from a friend, the other was free from a parts car at my local mechanic.
The trick is not over oiling them. You have to apply it sparingly.
