Allright, tpitcher.
You used a microscope to validate the size of the smallest particles stopped by your K@N from entering the engine.
Now, does that mean that trillions of the similartly sized or bigger particles didn't make it through?
You've made a statement that simply by looking at the amount and size of the dust particles coming out of the dirty side of your filter you came to a conclusion that your K&N filters just great.
We here tend to take a different approach by looking at the silicon and relative to dirt ingestion wear metal numbers in our used oil analysis.

Hi Vad,

We are all enthusiasts here and want the best for our vehicles.

I very was curious what the size of the fine powder was, so I measured and posted an average size of the smaller ones.

Maybe A LOT of particles that size, bigger and smaller got past it, maybe they didn't and so be it. I like hearing about the silicon being measured in the used oil analysis as better proof. I may take off the air pathway to check it out after I change my Transaxle & Differential oil to M1 today.

I've logged about 350k on K&N's and have been satisfied so far, but I'll "drop 'er like a Hot Potato" if I find out if something better comes along.

Heck, I may buy a PureOne to check 'em out. I just don't want to put a GM paper one back in my '03 GMC Sierra.

I wasn't the one making the initial claim like you were, I came in after your claims and asked you to prove it, you haven't and all of your follow-up comments further proves to me you don't know what you are talking about. This simple test shows that the K&N is more restrictive than the Mahle OEM paper filter.

So, they don't filter as well and they don't even flow better, so what is the point?

Also, Jim Conforti (well know BMW tuner) did some testing comparing the K&N to stock paper filter, he found that he K&N allowed 200-300% more dirt than the paper filter and only gets worse as it loads up with dirt (while the paper filter got more efficient).

I also have a private study done by a firm in the UK which clearly shows that OE paper filters filter better than K&N. I have personal dyno results too, but I see no point in sharing them with someone who hasn't provided anything to support their claims but rhetoric.

Which isn't at all saying they have developed the "perfect air intake system". Read it again, my comment was addressing the size of the panel filter only, that is only one component of the intake system.

My point is, the panel filter is not the bottleneck in the system. So, even if some other panel flowed 2% better than OE, it likely wouldn't matter as the bottleneck is usually somewhere else.

Have you checked out your entire intake system? What is the smallest point? Throttle body? Intake runners? Inlet/outlet to/from the airbox? How about the plastic portions of the intake? Have you compared them to the surface area of the panel filter?

Thanks for that revelation, and that has nothing to do with anything I said. But, you can upgrade your panel filter to anything you want. Matter of fact, you could redesign the panel to be five times bigger than stock. Do you think you will increase power with all other parts of the intake system remaining the same?

Actually, you can put anything you want on your car as can all the rest. As far as I am concerned, you can run without a filter if you like.

But, you won't see a K&N on one of my cars. And I have proof and studies backing up my comments, what do you have? Oh, that's right, nothing but K&N marketing. Good luck with that.

My 4.3L averaged about 2mpg increase over the stock AC Delco filter.

The thing is, ther are a lot of applications where the K&N does help and I have one of them.

None of those links above say really anything about K&N being a poor alternative to stock paper.

Meaningless, it is a motorcycle application and it isn't a stock airbox/panel replacement (I don't believe we are discussing either situation). I was specifically questioning your assertion that K&N panel filters flow better than stock paper filters which "constrict" as you put it at higher rpms.

Again, this isn't apples-to-apples, here you have a K&N cone filter set-up that replaced a stock airbox system. This wasn't a K&N panel filter for a stock paper filter like I have been discussing this whole time.

Umm, this isn't any type of study or dyno results?? The only issue I see there is potentially evidence that the K&N is letting by more dirt than the Fram that replaced it?

You can read right? Less flow is bad I believe, similar flow would mean no gains, more dirt being let by would be bad right?

And this proves what about all this purported dyno proven gains over paper filters that you asserted?

Again, how do used oil analysis prove how much dirt is being left by? I also don't see where they prove that stock paper filters are restrictive at higher rpms?

Well, maybe the K&N will be just fine for 250k miles, maybe a K&N can let in four times as much dirt as a stock paper filter over the same life and the motor (specifically the valve seals and piston rings) can handle it as other areas break down first. Maybe the increased wear in the motor drops compression by 10% versus 5% over the stock paper filter over than time and it really isn't all that noticeable. I really can't say for certain.

But, do you feel like you got a proven power increase from the K&N? I don't mean just a louder intake or the butt dyno. At a minimum, do back-to-back timed runs on the same chunk of pavement using a rolling start (say from 5mph to 60mph). Compare your results also doing highest gear runs from 40mph to 70mph for instance (assuming you have a manual and not an automatic transmission). I have done these basic tests very carefully when doing modifications and have found some interesting results.

Again, people can use whatever filter they want, one can remove the filter completely if they like (the one link above shows no measurable difference in power from removing the stock filter).

It is your choice, think about it logically and don't let marketing get in the way.

I used to be afraid of the K&N filters until I got my Corvette's first UOA. When I bought this car used I was scared to keep it's K&N on there, however my fears were unfounded since I've gotten consistently low silicon and consistently low engine wear in every UOA.

I'm not sure how much hp it might've given me, however it's definitely not hurting the hp output. And it definitely didn't allow too much dirt to get through it.

I no longer have that filter though, I now have a Vararam (ram air) system on my Corvette, and it came with it's own cotton gauze type filter. Hopefully it works as well as the K&N did!

Interesting. I was never afraid of K&N filters until I did my first used oil analysis on one of my vehicles.

Curious, did you ever use a stock paper panel filter? If so, how did your used oil analysis compare?

Do you feel that a used oil analysis will absolutely let you know how much potential dirt is entering the motor?

Good luck with the Vararam and hopefully you continue to get results you are comfortable with.

You seem to throw a lot of questions but yet you can't question his?

His results are all against what you are trying to disprove?

Why not say he is wearing out his engine and blowing it up like you have done with my thoughts?
 
Although Patman's used oil analysis are great, he's never posted a paper UOA from the same car so it's not proof that K&Ns are better. One case does not make proof.

I once worked at an oil change place, and a guy came in often with a work van, almost 300k on the odometer. The air housing was busted wide open allowing dirt to go right in and it had been that way for as long as I had been there. Guess we should all run no filter then huh?
 
i belong to a high performance motorcycle forum, a doOd did a before and after dyno on his scooter, he lost horsepower with a K&N..
also i had a k&n salesman tell me straight faced that their oil filter will make horsepower as well..anyone with that kind of ** is not to be taken seriously..ill never run a k&n, even in my lawn mower..
anyone know of a well know pro race team that uses them?? nascar, ama..anyone anywhere??

What do you want me to question? I followed up his post with a few relevant questions. Again, reread my comments above. And I have done considerably more than you have to prove you wrong yet you have done nothing to substantiate your claims, and you were the one that started this.

Really, his results tell me that stock paper filter is restrictive at higher rpms or that the K&N makes increased horsepower over a stock paper filter? I don't recall seeing that, you must be able to read into his comments more than I can.

You just don't get it do you. I very much believe he is ingesting more dirt than he would with a stock paper filter, but maybe his motor won't reflect it for 100,000s of miles, or maybe the increased dirt intake doesn't show up in his used oil analysis.

Sounds like you are digressing a little bit.

Before you were so forward about how K&N lets so much more dirt into the engine than a stock filter and even stated that I was wearing out my engine.

Now you are saying that you don't see the results with a paper and so therefore you can't give credit to how K&N is not hurting his engine?

As to the dyno results, how about going to the K&N site and see where most people are seeing their gains through their dyno results.

As you will see, most of the gains are in the higher rpms.

Again, all this "investigating" you have done and the links you have given don't prove your point, but just show a couple applications where the filter doen't net any better results.
 
I haven't tried a paper filter on this car, but I don't really think it could get much better than this though. To see only 11ppm of silicon in 9000 miles is pretty low for this engine.

I won't be able to try a paper filter now that I've got the Vararam anyhow, the only filters which are known to fit this unit are all cotton gauze or foam. I'm not about to experiment with finding a paper one which fits perfectly. The one that is in there now appears to seal up very nicely.
