Went back to Purolator from K&N

K&N results vary from car to car. I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up. On a Jaquar no gains don't surprise me, their probably well engineered from the factory. Now I just put a k&n cone to replace the modified stock air box and regular filter on my aspire and there was a big difference between the two - any gains on that thing is a *** send. Gentlemen it all depends on the vehicle.
 
I have had the SAME KnN air filter on my 95 neon since I bought it in 98. It had 31,000 miles on it, and now it has 146,000. I live in the pacific northwest and when it's not raining, its very dusty in this area. Also, I work at a rock pit. You can imagine the insane amount of dust I drive my little car into everyday to work and back. And I did not have any off-the-chart silicon content in the UOA. The filter got VERY dirty after about 10,000 miles and then I would clean it. To help extend that a little bit I purchased KnN's pre-filter wrap for the filter. It helped it a lot. It's much easier to clean. And goes longer between cleaning. Around 13,000.

As far as HP and mileage gains, who knows? My 'buttdyno' seemed to notice a gain in the high end. Im sure it does vary from car to car.

I've been using KnN for years, and havent had any problems as far as damage to the engine or shortening the life of one, at least not yet. As many miles that I've put on the neon, the compression is still in the 190's for all the cylinders. So that talks to me about KnN.
 
I've seen unholy amounts of dirt on a K&N. Not just on motorcycles, but also on my pickup when it was working in the sand in SW AZ all the time. It got so bad I thought the engine was going to die. No bad silicon numbers on the UOA, either. HOWEVER, it is clear that in the aggregate people suck in more abrasives with K&N filters. My point is just that a properly constructed oiled-gauze filter that has been properly serviced will capture enormous amounts of dirt and will, in fact, suffocate an engine to the point that it will only idle or outright die. All of this is possible (though quite uncommon) without harmful effects in the UOA.
 
I noticed the K&N filter I had in my Dakota 4.7 V-8 had no increase in MPG. one thing I noticed was an increase of dirt down my intake. when I took my TB off to clean. it was oily and very dirty. so before you ask it was oiled by K&N so if they cant oil it right then who can. well after seeing this it made me wonder how much dirt went down in to my engine. after seeing that I went back to the paper filter.

you all have to realize to get better air flow. you have to sacrifice filtration. this is what K&N does. after all why do they say not to use Offroading unless you use one of their foam filters over their reg filter. that should tell you that it does not filter a good as they want you to believe.
 
But the silica elevations are seen with paper or K&N.

Lots of K&N based used oil analysis where the silica is fine.

Really, prove it? That hasn't been my first hand experience.

And I have seen some where the K&N did worse.

BMW, an E36 M3 to be specific. I have also seen studies showing how much more dirt it allowed through compared to the OE panel filter (yes, fitment was fine, properly oiled, etc.).

When there are gains with the K&N, they are usually at the higher rpm levels if you look at the many K&N dyno pulls done throughout the net.
 
Wow, what contention!

I dropped one in my last GMC Trucks - have noticed a little "snappier" acceleration and slight increase in the truck's MPG, about 0.5 MPG.

I left it in for 50,000 miles and in between times at about 10k intervals, I take it out and bang the dirt out onto the cement.

There is a lot of dirt on the cement when I bang it out !!!

I just cleaned and re-oiled it 2 weeks ago. When I cleaned it under the sink, A LOT of very fine (~3-5 microns) kept coming out, so I kept draining water on it.

Proof shows to me it is doing a great job of filteration !

Just don't over-oil them and you won't suck in oil.

ok, i was wondering this too.... i seen a huge increase in silicons in my oil since installing a k&n. My car has an aftermarket intake and K&N cone filter. My dads ranger did the same thing, and his is a drop in.
I dont like it.
 
Uh, serious!

Are you in disbelief about knocking the dirt out every 10k (not slamming it, just tapping)or all of the particles in the sink bottom...?
 
It is just another case where vad is pulling his arrogant immaturity for no reason.

It usually comes about when someone is talking about K&N filters or his sacred German Castrol Syntec.

The reasons that made think you're joking:

1. Your claim of mpg increase by 0.5 mpg.
2. Your claim that you could actually see and recognize as such the 3-5 micron dust particles coming out of your filter.
