Enjoyed a little time with my first moth/butterfly sighting of the Spring.

Mt Ha Ling - my 10th and perhaps last time. Either it's getting steeper, or I'm getting older. ;)

Starting out, with a view of the new parking lot (now paved).

An ominous sign ...

Very hazy due to the smoke from the forest fires

It's a steady uphill grind, climbing 800 m over 3.3 km

The trees are thinning out now.

Very nice lookout that wasn't here in 2016, the last time I was up here.

These stairs are also new. I think the trail was shutdown in 2018 for improvements.

Home stretch, above the treeline. The ascent in loose scree is scary. The descent is worse.

To be continued ...

Time to revive this thread!

Only 1.7 miles? Why, that's not far!

Hmmm, it appears we're gaining some elevation ... (Huff puff)

Hey, this sign must be wrong ... surely we've gone more than half a mile!

Nice view of Estes Park CO

We met a very nice young lady from Minnesota, and hiked with her. The three of us were all avid readers, and exchanged favourite book titles and authors. We've already exchanged emails, and hope she can visit us sometime.

The 1.7-mile trail length one way works out to about 9000'. We ascended about 1000', so that's one part in nine, which I think is an 11% grade on average. No wonder we flatlanders from c. 750' elevation were pretty bushed by the end. Fortunately we'd already been in Fort Collins (elev. 5000') for a week, so were fairly well acclimatized to the thin air.

Anyway, it was an excellent day. Highly recommended.
