Highway Trooper got me doing 88 in a 65 early this morning

I was doing 88 miles per hour early this morning on the Turnpike in a 65 mph zone. 🥵 I see the dreaded blue lights of an FHP Trooper and quickly pull over to the side of road a far as possible so he is not near the roadway exposed to passing traffic.

My insurance card and registration was old and didn’t have the newest paperwork (everything is valid and paid) so I’m thinking I will get 2 tickets. I apologized for speeding and he ran my license and gave me a warning.

He asked me why I’m speeding, I told him I’m headed 50 miles away and theres little traffic on the road. Luckily he gave me a warning and let me go. I was very surprised he didn’t give me a ticket.
 
Its been my experience that if you pull over properly , are polite and respectful, AND don't have a violation record a mile long, you sometimes only get a warning.

Good job pulling way over, you can bet he noticed that. That way he can place his car so he is not as exposed.
 
My son was clocked doing 87 in a 55. The cop gave him a ticket for 65 in a 55. He could have had his truck impounded, license suspended for 6 months, and it would have gone on his driving record. The ticket fine was $263. My friend knows our local DA. He's a good family friend. She was his children's teacher when they were in school (Nazarene church). He made it a "No motorcycle helmet" ticket, which reduced it to $50. And, it didn't go on his driving record. Man, was he lucky!

It doesn't seem right that the LEO has that much discretion at his disposal because someone is polite. Caught is caught.

I'm not even sure why there's an LEO involved.

Put up a camera, mail a fine. Base the fine on the difference between the speed limit, the speed recorded, and the speeder's income level.

Simple and inexpensive to employ.
 
I was flagged over once doing 35 in a 35 by a roadside cop.
He proceeded to ask me about my truck.
Chatted with him for a few then went on my way.
This was like 30+ years ago

Speed cameras were removed from the highways in Phoenix even though the data showed there were fewer accidents with them in place. They offended people's idea of fair chase. I got one of those tickets 10 years ago on the way to the airport, so mad at myself because I don't speed, just didn't see the signs go from 65 to 55. There was no doubt who was driving the truck in the photo.
 
My days of excessive speeding are long over, with a cdl required for my job a ticket for 15 over means no license which means no jobby. Im glad you got a warning, just remember in the future if you cant do the time dont do the crime! If you got the right officer, in the right mood, 23 over could be a trip to the hoosegow in some places.

I never was one to speed much in general driving even when younger, however when I did speed it was usually the full felony stop at gunpoint, going to jail, going to need a lawyer variety of speeding. ( How fast is a 86 mustang with 2.73 gears going at redline in 5th gear? I figured it was between 140 and 150mph. Other time was in a Wrx STi, 140mph came effortlessly and car still felt like it was on rails.) VERY Stupid, but the times I did it there was no one in sight for miles so if my stupidity caused me to wreck the only one I would have taken out was myself.

Years ago before my CDL days I rolled thru a 4 way stop in fast enough for a second gear start, an officer at the top of the hill spotted me and I got pulled over. I had a clean record and luckily he let me off with a very stern warning, I told him I rolled thru the stop sign because I didn't see any other vehicles (including him!) and was being lazy and stupid and didn't want to hit first gear.

Im not sure my reasoning impressed him very much, I was being honest though, I broke the law, got caught and wasn't going to minimize it or complain about it. I completely deserved a ticket. To this day I am so grateful he gave mercy, since I still have a clean driving record.

It definitely helps if you are respectful and mindful like I was and you were.

It's funny that a camera, simple black-and-white proof, is considered unfair.

I got my share of snap shots in Germany, especially when I first moved there. The fines hurt, but they slowed me down.

Why should the speeder's 'income level' matter? By that reasoning...you'd have a lot more low income speeders....
 
Last ticket I got was for a busted windshield. Cop was coming towards me then lights came on. I knew I had at least 3 tickets on a rather bad day as my daily was being towed as it left me walking home. I got in only vehicle in driveway that hadn't been inspected in years and some idiot thought it was funny to break windshield. I just bought car for 100.00. He asked me if I knew why I was being stopped and I have an idea which I pointed at windshield. He pulled my records came back and told me to make sure I have seat belt on 🤣. Gave me a 15.00 ticket that didn't go against me. He told to take the 300.00 that he could write up and replace windshield. Wife asked me why he stated next time wear your seatbelt then I explained it to her. Guess he didn't want her to know he gave me a break anyhow she was in passenger seat.

Because it levels the playing field. A $250 fine isn't going to deter someone making $250,000/yr like it would someone making $25,000/yr.

But $2,500 might.

Waze is great, assuming people actually report in. My radar detector has saved me where waze has failed, they’re all great tools but must be used properly and with a bit of common sense. But don’t get me started on the arbitrary speed limits in some places. There is a section of 80/94 in Indiana that is 55mph. Literally nobody is doing 55mph through that area.

My first ever ticket I was clocked doing 86 in a 55... officer wrote it as 75 in a 55. I had just put mildly louder mufflers on my Durango and wanted to hear them, so I got on the highway and opened it up a little too much lol... Paid the deferral on that. My wife got clocked doing 65 in a 35, officer wrote it as a normal speeding ticket instead of reckless so we paid the deferral on that one as well.
 
I've never been let off with just a warning but have gotten the speed I was going knocked down from like 85 in a 65 to 75 in a 65.
