ok, I have a 99 neon with a 2.0 DOHC I have completely rebuilt it. It now has 11.5 to 1 compression and large cams, and I am running it on E85. what would be the best oil?

Can't disagree with the use of Red Line and don't know that I can disagree with Bryan about the 5W-20, though I do have my reservations. I would contact Dave at Red Line and tell him what you have done and get his recommendation.

With hot cams , the cranking compression is brought back up to near stock by increasing the Compression Ratio. No real oil use difference.
If you are going to run it hard AND use E85, I would use a 5-30.
My owners manual recommend more frequent oil changes with a E85 vehicle, if you use that fuel more than 1/2 the time.
So keep it fresh, as well. In your case, the oft stated mantra of the 3,000 mile oil change may be correct.

I'd also consider the Amsoil Dominator 10w-30, which they specifically recommend for alcohol based fuels...

Do you run it at the track, or just play with it around town. If it is just around town, go with the thin oil. If you take it to the track, bump it up to a 30W or 40W. I believe in thin oils, but you get a margin of safety with a thicker oil when you are at the track.

as of right now, It is just a Daily driver. I would love to get on a road coarse with it sometime though! The amsoil dominator, souds real nice. That is what I was looking for, a special oil for alcohol. But, I checked out the amsoil web site and I don't see anything about it being special for alcohol.

Here is a little more to the story.

I had the engine together and installed this spring. I bought the short block slightly used online. After getting it together and starting it, with rough tuning, then driving 500 miles. There was metal in the oil. So I go another 1000 miles and change it again. There is metal again in the oil. So I put a pressure gauge on it. It says it has plenty of pressure. So I go another 1500 miles or so. Then check the oil again. There is still metal. So at this point, I decide to take the engine out and take it to a machine shop. The one I used to have my head work done initially. After tearing it down, there is only some minor bearing wear. The guy there says it is from using too thin of oil. I was using 5-30 mobil one! If there was any problem with the oil, I would say, is was from fuel dilution, from running way too stinking rich. I will be getting the engine back in a couple days, and need to decide what to put in it.

a Neon, no matter how modified....is still just a neon. Use the cheapest oil can get. Kinda silly to put expensive oil in a cheap econobox.

That's about the most dim-witted reply I have ever seen on this site.........

I was thinking the same thing. I wasn't even going to acknowledge it. When I am done with my car, you are more than welcome to come take a ride in it. It sure isn't going to be a M5, but it will be a NICE car!

No amount of makeup or bolt ons can change the fact that it will still be just a Neon.....an entry level economy car, which deserves an economy oil.Why waste money on a little car designed to SAVE money???? Kind of like putting an inground pool and tennis court behind a doublewide...it just doesnt make a difference or sense.

Well, if it were an old bone stock Neon I might agree with you, but it is not. Rocky has spent some money on this motor and it is no longer just a plain old bone stock Neon. You might say he has put the tennis court in there and he wants to take care of it the best he can.

I reckon all those fellows racing Neons in the SCCA that are putting out over 250 hp should not of done that either. Somebody should have told them it was a mistake.

Give him a break.
