If everyone lived by this philosophy every aircooled VW would be doomed including mine.

I drive a Neon and use Pennzoil YB 5w-30... certainly not the most inexpensive oil but not bottom of the barrel either.

You will find some Neon owners who fill their crankcases with synthetic. Mainly the SRT4 owners but there are still folks with regular Neons that run synthetic. OMG eh?

So why do we do run decent oil? Neon or not, we still love cars and will take care of them... be the vehicle an underestimated Neon or the blazing hot Viper.

They are rated at 8, but I suspect the TBN is a tad higher. I will find out in a week or so.

Growing up my Grandfather My cousins and I put together many VW's and Pintos for local racing Outlaw mini's . The only rules were no more than 8" wide of tread per tire, safety equipment had to meet the criteria naturally aspirated engines and the car must wiegh no less than 1pound for every Cubic centimenter of displacement. That was fun and a challenge. 4 bangers have their place. Not everyone can afford a highdollar sports or race car but there are plenty of people who can have alot of fun with a neon for example. (I might add that there are probably folks who could afford high dollar sports cars who prefer the smaller cars for the challenge and good company)

I find it in poor taste to say such things about siomeone who is enjoying working on their equipment. This doesn't sound like a ricer Or anything of the sort. This sounds like an entusiast who came here for some good advice.

Although an SRT4 is "still a Neon", it will blow the doors off most of your average cars. I guess an Evo 8, 9, 10 is "just a Lancer" and a WRX or an STI is "just a Subaru". If the guy wants to take a bone stock Neon and modify it, let him do it. Great sleeper cars and pretty good aftermarket support.

That is pure and utter tripe. He obviously has a substantial amount of money invested in the ENGINE, and if he feels that by using a good oil in that engine, that he is protecting his investment, then who are you to make this rather arrogant comment?

It may be a NEON, and if it had a STOCK engine... Then perhaps Synthetic oil is overkill. But it's NOT a stock engine, so any references to the CAR being "just a Neon" are null and void because the ENGINE is no longer "economy junk".

I know the owners of a couple of mildly modified 13-second Neons and they sure don't think their cars are "economy junk". They have invested time and money into making some pretty decent sleeper cars (and your comments are proof-in-point of the kind of attitude that people have toward these cars) that raise some eyebrows at the track when they lay down the times they do.

There are those who go out and drop a large amount of money on a car that is fast.

And there are those who go out and take a normal vehicle and work on it and MAKE it fast.

Which do you think involves more work? Which do you think involves more hands-on skill? Which do you think deserves more RESPECT? The kid who's mom bought him a stock LS1 Camaro or the kid that built the Neon that is FASTER than the Camaro?

Think about it.

Sorry to have offended anyone...the original poster started this thread ASKING for opinions on which oil to run...I gave mine, which I stand behind, any api sm oil off the shelf for this car is perfectly fine.I never attacked the owner, told him he was dumb to have the Neon, etc, I stated my opinion based on the application, as has everyone else.....geez some here have feminine like fragile egos tied to the car they drive.

qship, your first sentence to me sounded like you were putting down the guy's ride, when all he was asking for was some straight forward help in choosing oil for a non-stock engine. I would have been offended too.

How about some good ole Mobil 1 15W50 silver cap? TT Z32 guys love it. I used it year round in my n/a for a few years. Thinking about going back to it on my next oci this winter.

I bet that one awesome car you have!

I like the sounds of the delvac oil too! I think it is on top right now. I will start with some 10w 30/40 mineral oil for the break in, then go on to the delvac.
