Higher TBN

IS a higer tbn better for extended drains? Also, on Mobil's website only the virgin TBNs are given for 0w-40, 0w-30, and 0w-20. Why? Does anyone know the tbn of the normal 5w30(for sm and sl) and extended performance 5w30?IM trying to decide which is the best M1 to use in a camry for a 10,000 drain. Would I be better using the 0w-40(tbn of 11) if it had a higher tbn than the 5w30? Thanx. I tried to us e the search function, no luck.

For now I say don't use Mobil 1 5w30, since it appears to have high wear issues and it has a somewhat low TBN (there's a VOA of it in that forum).

If Mobil 1 is what you are set on, I think 0W-40 is your best bet for extended drains if 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck is ruled out.

Why do you say Mobil 1 appears to have high wear issues? There are many members of this board that have used it with great success over hundred of thousands of miles...

It won't hurt anything but you may lose some gas mileage if you've been using much thinner oils. I doubt it will amount to anything even detectable.

They haven't done those miles on the current formulation though, which is what I have issues with (from used oil analysis and competitors' testing). Past versions were fine and dandy in my book.

IMO you can't go solely on used oil analysis. used oil analysis on past Mobil 1 have shown high Iron, but the engines have done really well over tons of miles...

Also you can't go by competition, they will try to come up with things that really aren't significant to make them seem like they are better than the rest...

Stevie, I think the same considering those two things SEPARATELY but those two things plus a former XOM formulator's private comments about Mobil 1 is too much evidence for me.

Sequ. IVA is considered to be significant enough to be a current and future test in oil specs.

Here is the other thing. I have 5 bottles of the SL Mobil 1 5w30. Would this be better than the cuurent stuff? Is it a PAO base or w/e that perfoms better than the new junk? Thanx I wonder if Mobil only gave the TBN of those three oils because they are the only ones still pao based????
