High speed, no brain

I experienced a "Death Wobble" at 130MPH on my Yamaha Maxim-X when I was 19 years old. I'm very lucky to have not even crashed, let alone be alive. It scared me so bad that I never went over 70MPH on a motorcycle again, ever. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

100 mph in almost any car is safe today particularly on an emply four-lane highway.

I wouldn't quite call a '98 Ford Escort a car from "today" in the sense that I think you mean. That thing was an econobox with econo brakes and narrow econo tires, and gave every signal that it was never meant to venture much over 60 MPH. At ~100 MPH, it may have been "safe" in that it wouldn't spontaneously fly apart, but I don't think it could have been relied upon to do anything other than careen violently off the road in anything like a panic situation.

Oh my!!

So glad you made it through that.

I've taken many of my cars up to 100+ mph but never really felt too nervous, except in my 93 Crown Victoria with a sloppy front end and my 86 K-body LeBaron. I tried to hit 100 mph in my 94 Safari but it just wouldn't go that fast.

When I was in high school I did several typical stupid things. Was Racing in a 1992 BMW 325 in a 45mph zone, looked down and was running 130. Had my grandad's hot rod 1977 f-150 with 4.11's and a c6 to over 100, and ran square into a curb in a 1990 Olds 442 going 60mph while showing off.. Could say I was a slow learner. Thankfully no one ever got hurt or sent to jail.

How about 103 mph (and a speeding ticket to prove it) in a 63 Triumph Herald, on a two lane highway!

Top speed recently with Kreen in the sump with oil, 90mph. Most of my driving was between 70mph to 80mph with very light to no traffic in VA, NC and parts of SC.

Just take a look at the advertising for new vehicles.....fast and furious sells vehicles.

I have not seen an ad lately, with the exception of hybrid vehicles, where the advertisement shows, on the TV, a vehicle driving at a safe speed or within the speed limit.

Marketing.....is the name of the game.....SPEED SELLS....even though you legally can't drive over 75 MPH on any of the US Interstates that I know about, the ads for vehicles show high speed driving and leaving others in "the dust". So society accepts this and this is what sells vehicles from Cadillacs to VW.

Please.....don't shoot the messenger.

I agree, like, where are you going to drive these new Corvettes and such? I also used to have an 07 GSXR 600 and you couldnt even make it sweat on normal roads. Think youre being hard on it? Well you still have 5000 more RPMs before it would like you to upshift.

Circa 1970: My car was an honest to goodness 1957 Chevy Bel-Air 2-dr HT.(Talk about cars I should have kept!

) It had been converted from the factory PowerGlide ATx to a 3-speed manual trans, with the world's oldest Hurst Shifter on it. Engine, 283 ci V8 with Carter WCFB 4-bbl carb- with oil bath air cleaner! Those who knew for sure assured me it had the good PowerPak heads on it. It was no screamer, but fairly healthy for a high school boy's car. Tires were whatever bias plys were around in the stock 14" size- poor choices for high speed running or cornering. Heck, I used to run Sears recaps on it.

Heading north out of my tiny hometown was a long staight stretch of 2-lane highway that went downhill for about a mile, then uphill with a curve at the hilltop- where you could also turn off the road to the local small hospital! Late one night I'd spotted the local police at the other end of town a few minutes before, & opened the Chevy up.

About halfway up the hill the speedo read ~105 mph. I backed off the gas pedal- and the throttle hung wide open! All I could think of was to turn off the ignition, and did so. The inside of the car instantly lit up from all the fire shooting out of the rear added-on glasspacks dual exhaust. I made it safely around the hilltop curve, but not by much. Got it shut down past the bottom of the far side of the hill, on the next straight stretch leading to a small bridge. Whew!

I found & fixed the throttle problem the next day. But I didn't do anything that fast & stupid again for a very long time.

92-95MPH on the drag strip...65km/h downhill on my bicycle...maintained that through corners for 4km. What can I say, I just don't see the point of all-out speed in a car. 2nd and 3rd gear pulls are fun but I usually shut it down after that.

I have run into a lot of guys on the high way that want to pull beyond 85MPH and that's just insane IMO.

Insert Toyota Recall joke here.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention ... yes, we were drunk

[censored]. Stock gearing wouldn't allow you to come close. 140MPH sure...but not 165.

Its amazing how when we were young we (at least I) didnt know about tire ratings, not like moms Celica had Z rated tires lol.

Nick R's post also had me thinking of some dumb thing that someone got away with years ago.

And the request for “Post up any stupid speeds in unfit cars” had me thinking “BINGO”.

So back in the good old high school days when you could pick up a very used late 60's Impala for anything from free to 50 to 100 bucks, a friend of mine gets a hold of another one, and as he had done with new acquisitions prior to that, takes it out to a stretch of road that evening to see what it can do. However between acquiring it and getting to that road, stops and pick up a good friend and then a couple of girls. So the pedal hits the floor board for a while and the speedometer stops climbing at 114 as stays there for a minute or so. Also logged 114 miles on it that night.

The next day he pulls it into the garage and puts it up on jack stands to give it a good once over, and see what it will require for the upcoming inspection. A minute or so after crawling under it he asked, “ how fast did we go in this thing last night” and someone who shell remain nameless answered 114 MPH. Then he asked “and how far did we drive in it”, answered with 114 miles. He crawls half way out from under it with the trouble light still lit in his hand, and said “ this car does not have a frame, take a look, it is all rusted away, there is nothing there”.

We pulled the engine and trany and dropped them in a similar vehicle with a good frame, and never again took a new acquisition out to see what it would do, without first going over it.

This is an interesting thread. I'm glad that almost everything mentioned so far is much stupider than the second stupidest thing I ever did.

My number one was something that I still don't want to commit to writing, but I will say that it involved police and a train. No one got hurt and nothing got damaged, but it was very illegal and no one got caught.

Pass the can of beer from the back right window of a 4 door to the friend on the motorcycle while both vehicles are doing over 100 MPH. Naa we would never (admit) to doing something like that.

Come on Stu, you HAVE to tell that story!

Out here in UT I-15 has sections were the speed limit is currently set at 80 MPH. I'm not sure how many other western states have these sections too.

80 MPH really is nothing anymore. I've always got my cruise set in my Jeep GC to 80 MPH going to Vegas on I-15 and people are always flying past aleast going 85 MPH to 90+ MPH.
