Nick Rs post about his 0-100 run got me thinking back. A good while ago I had a 93 Talon, MT, non turbo. Blue with a black roof, cool looking car. I was young and so dumb and had it up to 130mph going downhill in the mountains. So much could have gone wrong, but Im alive.
Post up any stupid speeds in unfit cars youve done, I would like to hear 'em.

I think most of us are guilty of doing some really dumb stuff when we were younger. And the older I get, the dumber those things begin to look.

I plead the fifth. However, it may or may not be a SC Buick, and it may or may not be 120 mph. If it was 120mph then it could have been say............ 140mph.

The Regal's suspension in stock form is def not good enough for those speeds.
--------
There was also a certain Olds Cutlass Ciera that could have done 150 mph (verified by a friend in a Integra with a 160 speedo). Apparently Superchips changed the top speed to 150...... I had that car a long time ago. Neither of these cars have any business [neither do I] going at these speeds. Even if the highway is clear.

You won't believe this......

My high school friend had a 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 400 CI engine.

I was driving (as it was past Midnight & I was 17, he was still 16).

So we got going 132 MPH and he said: "Slow down - I forgot to tell you the back rim only has 2 studs holding it on!"

OMG, I slowed down and BLASTED him for not letting me know beforehand!!

You ain't kidd'n'

Is the fact the cars of today are more capable magnify the stupidity of the task attempted. I think yes.

I did 140 mph+ when I had my turbo Talon. In fairly heavy traffic on a major interstate in broad daylight!

The one speeding ticket I got was for coasting down a hill going 38 in a 35.

Go figure.

you're right, I don't believe it. how did you determine it was 132? w/ an analog speedo bouncing all around? and I'd be willing to bet the speedo only went to 120.

did about 135 or so in a '88 M5. felt solid and safe.

came down a hill real fast once in my 1st car, a '65 malibu, non-power 4 wheel drums. brakes overheated and pedal would not go down.
good thing the light at the bottom of the hill was green.

My buddy in 1965 had a new 365 hp Vette and we had it out in the country on a straight run for about 5 miles WOT. 165 MPH speedo was buried so I don't know how fast we were going but the telephone poles strobing by seemed like the world was in slo-mo.

Will never do that again...

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention ... yes, we were drunk

the stupid: setting the front wheel down at 123mph on the R1

the stupid: verifying top speed on the R1 on interstate I-70

the stupid: activating the NOS (100shot) on my 1994 Mustang GT 5.0 in 2nd gear while street racing.. things got real scary..

the stupid: jumping a set of RR tracks in a 86 thunderbird..WOW..

NO gentlemen, i wouldnt do any of this stuff today.

100 mph in a '98 Ford Escort, on a four-lane highway, at night... with four passengers. I reckon that's the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. Gambling with one's own life is bad enough; gambling with others' lives is way over the line.

Oh brother!!!!!!!!! Are you serious??

1st of all, YOU weren't there. 2nd, it wasn't bouncing that much that a driver can't tell. 3rd, it was a 140MPH max speedometer.

Wow.

I've done 130-140 MPH many times in BMWs and Porsches on the German Autobahn.

Stupidest thing I've done is 105 MPH on a Harley-Davidson on I-35.

75ish MPH in a Jeep CJ-7 no seat belts/door/top in high school. Likely top speed.

That vehicle was HORRIBLE and dangerous on road. I have no idea why my parents let me drive it. I nearly rolled it it twice driving to fast on a gravel road and another time hit ice. Acutally got it on two wheels but it feel back with a nice thud.

That doesn't sound that bad to me unless you weren't comfortable with the speed.
100 mph in almost any car is safe today particularly on an emply four-lane highway.

Before they clamped down on speeding here, I'd used to routinely do 150 mph plus in my Porsche and 130 mph in my Bimmer. Under the right conditions speed is not an issue. If it was the Autobahn would be a death trap but the reality is that it is one of the safest highway systems in the world.

But confessing to the stupidest things I've done on the road, and that was when was young and fearless, had to be impromtu street racing and 10/10th driving on some favorite curvy roads. I eventually took it to the track where such behaviour is much safer.

When I was 15 my cousin came home from college for a funeral (of all things) and we took my uncle's new Mazda Mx6 a few exits down the interstate to go get a food platter from a supermarket. He never drove the car before and wanted to see what it could do.

We get going 95 in a 65 and somehow herd a 1980s escort, tercel, and other lap traffic ahead of us into also going 95. This goes on for minutes! We pull off to get the food and my cousin says, "I hope they don't want to see my license to pay by check, I don't have it on me". "Maybe you shouldn't be speeding" was my nerdy response. "Oh, you have 24 hours to procure it" he says.

We get the food and back on the highway. Hit 120 on the way home, zipping down a hill into a valley mostly to see if passing a law abiding minivan would be like passing a parked car. It was, except parked cars don't have people giving us the stink-eye.

Then we set the cruise for a reasonable 80 and it felt like 45. Saw a state trooper heading the opposite direction, all lit up.

Car handled fine, the wind just made it hunker down.

Yes, 140 mph speedo in the "cockpit" style dash layout. My 1970 with the 400 went about 137, not 140 but past 135. No bouncing. I'm not sure about speedo accuracy at that point, but it was accurate at 91 according to the dragstrip's timer. That's scary fast in what feels like a 2-ton waterbed at such a speed.

In contrast, I had an '87 Caprice police model with a 350 that could wheeze up to 115 after awhile.

Certainly, such driving should only occur on a track, not on public roads. Things could have been much different.

My cruze definitely isn't unstable or scary at 100. It's still smooth, quiet, and planted. It doesn't feel any different than going 65. That to me, is the most amazing thing about my adventure.

I did get our old wrangler up to 90 once. That was exciting. It was downhill, and there was a mountain to climb after hitting the bottom. I wanted as much momentum as I could get. Was still going 35 when I hit the top.
