If you’re referring to the EngineLabs/MotorTrend article written by Lake Speed Jr, well, let’s just say that a couple of the board experts (formulators and blenders) have chimed in that many of the claims made in that article hold no water. This is from actual industry experts, not the vice president of marketing (as LSJ is). So, it’s not as critical of an indictment on diesel oil use in gas engines as the article would have you believe. Just sayin…
Thank you for inform me!

"Suitable for VW/Audi 500.00/501.01/ 502.00/505.00/505.01, BMW LL-01, water-cooled Porsche A40 and Mercedes-Benz 229.1/229.3/229.5 applications"

Not the same as having the formal approval is what he was getting at. It's like Liquimoly Molygen 5W40 - not approved but "recommended for" cars requiring those typical Euro approvals. HPL is the same. If you *need* the approval, you will have to go with the one common OTS oils like M1 etc. If you trust the company that "recommends" their oil for cars requiring that approval, there are other options that of course are just fine to use like the Redline or HPL etc.

In before bickering about approvals vs. recommended for.

Redline is very well regarded within the BMW community. Approval not strictly necessary for a 28 year old car like mine.

Most People also dont need a Expensive coil over Suspension, better brakes or stikier Tyres on their car. Or a upgraded Stereo system.
Everything is fine, working and tested in Original condition, when the car is in the Showroom of the dealer. Why Change?

Because we like to do so. And because often it´s better than OEM.

And now? OTS oil from Walmart or the real Deal PAO+Ester + a very robust add pack from Red Line?
VOA of the Redline: https://oil-club.de/index.php?thread/1620-redline-5w-40/

Is there any harm beside the hole in the wallet when one buy the best oil he could find compared to cheaper OTS oils from Walmart?

I am not sure that makes any sense.
When you upgrade brakes, suspension, you do it bcs. there is real benefit to it.
Oil is different. Are you saying Mobil1 doesn’t have PAO or Ester? It is available in Wal Mart. Castrol 0W40?

So, since you are comparing audio upgrades, suspension etc. tell me exactly where I am going to benefit running Redline 5W40 over Castrol 0W40? Here is UOA of Castrol 0W40 with 5k of which some 10% is track that includes sessions as long as 1 1/2hrs without pit stop at 1600m altitude, 40c ambient temperature. Left column. Right is Castrol Edge 0W30 winter conditions.

It’s a feel good thing. There may not be any mechanical benefit, but it may make me feel like I’m treating my toy to the best it can get! Logic would say M1 0W40 FS (or other similar OTS) at the end of the day.

One could argue Redline over other boutique oils like LM or Motul because they are forthcoming about the base stocks in the product.

I just went back and re-read some threads on a BMW forum that I frequent, lost of people using M1 0W40!
