High Mileage S2000 needs some advice!

S2K isn't very picky about oil. Their "spec" is pretty generic and confusing. I run M1 0W-40 or Red Line 10W-30 in mine, at 192K miles. That's what I'd recommend to you, of course.

Sure, okay. But you said "Honda spec’d 10W-30 for these so just run that" as if one recommendation was all they gave.

Others need to get over themselves as well and give advice that is based on what's given. Considering the higher ambient there and the consumption on this engine the 40-grade is a better recommendation.
I’m at AutoZone and there’s a special on Castrol Edge. Can I can get the 5qt jug of 5W-40 and top off with 0W-40 “European Formula”?

I wouldn't worry too much about what oil I put in it as long as it's a good grade of oil and oil changes are being done on a regular basis. I had an '88 Ford Escort that had 518K miles on it when I retired it back about 2011 or 2012. I used conventional 10w40 in it year around even though Ford spec'd 5w30. The one thing I did that most people don't do is if the oil level dropped 1/2 a quart I topped it back off instead of running it until it was a full quart low. Toward the end it was using quite a bit of oil and instead of filling it with new oil for it to disappear in a few hundred miles when it got low I'd add oil I'd drained from my better cars at oil change time. Even refilling with oil that had 3-5K miles on it I didn't see much if any increase in oil consumption. Back in the late 80's-early '90's I had a '76 Chrysler that I used as a work car to and from work on construction sites. It used/leaked about a quart every 300-400 miles so I finally just quit changing oil in it. When I sold it it had been over 31K miles since it's last oil change. Consumption hadn't increased much if any and there was no knocking in the engine when I got rid of it. The person I sold it to drove it another year or 2 before scrapping it because it wouldn't pass emissions testing that had just gone into effect in that area.

Shell 5w40 a3 b4 is what we run in our fully built 320hp k24.

I dont think you need to switch oil because of milage. Only thing that is weak on the f20 engines are the frm liners.

The timing chain tensioners are a known failure point with the S2000.

Synthetic or semi-synthetic 5W40/10W40/15W40 is what I would run, given your climate and usage. 15W50/20W50 if on track and/or hottest season of the year, still synthetic or semi-synthetic.

All things considered, including the exotic nature of this engine (high-revving, and more in commin with a motorcycle engine than other car engines), my preference would be for a full synth oil with around 3.5 HTHS and low amounts of viscosity modifier (for clean piston rings). Also, having low amounts of VM, and relying on a high-quality, relatively thick base oil, means that the oil will do a very good job of staying in grade throughout OCI, despite your fun runs up to 9000 RPM!

Several good choices on Gokhan’s “Automated A_Harmann list”, including:

• Amsoil Heavy Duty ACD 10W-30 (which is actually a straight 30 grade, but the base oil is high enough quality that it meets 10W-30 standards) (0.62% VM)

• Motul 8100 X-Clean+ 5W-30 (2.7% VM)

• Ravenol VMP 5W-30 (2.63% VM)

The above 3 are basically boutique oils that offer very high performance, but another good choice that you can probably find on the shelf locally would be:

• M1 HM 10W-30. HTHS of 3.5, only 5.31% VM, and it‘s cheap compared to the others.

Good advice. I run MaxLife 10w30 in my 2000 S2000. It has an easy life and just used for weekend cruising. If I was taking it to the track I would worry more.

Yes, 10w-30 is specd for normal all year round use in the owners manual, while 5w-40 is specd for winter use, below freezing.
This "weird" reccomendation from Hondas puzzles S2000 owners for ever.

EDIT: AP1s2k was faster.
Today on s2ki.com one member was saying that about half of the members of the S2ki forum are also members of Bitog...
That was me! 😂
